Title: Driving to Turkey - solution
Post by: glennat on June 15, 2005, 13:02:48 PM
It has been asked by some forum members whether anyone has any ideas on how to drive to Turkey...well, I have just found out:

UK - Calais - Reims - Metz - Nancy - Strasbourg - Zurich - St Gotthard - Lugano - Milano - Bologna - Ancona - Fethiye.

You don't drive into these places, just follow the motorway signs until you reach them.  ie, From Calais follow signs to Reims, as you reach the Reims turn-off you will see a sign for Metz.  And so on.

It'll take 1 week, cost £400 + fuel + tolls + insurance.

The journey (and cost) includes two ferries (one is a two night & 3 day trip).

You will be expected to leave Turkey, with your car, within 6 months. You will have paperwork handed to you on one of the ferries which state this.

Tesco car insurance (amongst others) will insure your car for this.

Glen.

Hi Glen, How much does it cost to sail from Ancona to Fethiye? Its a long way as you are sailing down the Adriatic and round Greece. Can you sail into Fethiye direct? Many thanks

Val

Doh! just read your post properly and it includes the ferry! :-\ I'd still be interested to know though as it seems very reasonable especially if you've a fair bit of stuff to shift!

Hi Valerie,

If you follow this link http://www.fethiyetimes.com/main/driving%20to%20Fethiye.htm you'll be able to read a complete breakdown of the journey (Someone with the initials PT actually wrote it).
To answer your question on the Turkey stage of the journey - the answer is that the ferry doesn't take you to Fethiye, it takes you to Cesme.  You have to drive from there.

Sorry...:(

Glen

after 6 month have to get car out of the country
car knackered, paperwork a major problem
the cars are expensive here but better than having to go out country 6 mths later and not allowed back for a long time

How about when you get back to the UK buy a personal numberplate from about £99 then your car wont match up to the paperwork over here : :) there's probably a flaw here so it won't work but might be worth a try: :):D

Lindi,  it must stay out for 6 months. Then you can bring it in for 6 more months then must stay out for good.

Tribalelder, wont work because your chasis and engine number wont change and they have that on record.

Sorry to be picky.....The cars visa lasts 180 days not 6 months.....the visa shows the VIN number as well as the registration so somethings gonna match and give you some explaining to do.

One of our team has just driven down this week and the very detailed experience will be posted on our website shortly. I'll post the link on this thread.

Always one to beat the system- sorry- as the buzzwordy people annoyingly say, "think out the box" or "push the envelope"

- have two cars, stick one outside country in peasants barn in Rhodes or (whereever) and have another in Turkey, every 180 days swop them. The finer details work out thru trial and error.!!!

I wonder? if the car not in Turkey for more than 180days do you have to pay the annual tax??? hmmm now i'm thinking.

I had on my "triptik" entry 3rd of August, valid until 3 febuary which makes 184 days.

Dippey, your system is all well and good but you can only bring each car in twice for a six month stint and then thats it.

Just for you Dippey,

When coming to Turkey, international air routes should be followed. Private planes may stay for up to three months in Turkey with tourist status, but for longer periods permission should be obtained from;
Gumrukler Genel Mudurlugu
(The General Directorate of Customs) Ulus Ankara
Tel: (312) 310 38 80, 310 38 18,Fax: (312) 311 1346
The airports of Ankara, Adana, Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Trabzon and Dalaman have ties for private planes. It is also possible to hire planes and helicopters in Turkey.
For further information, apply to;
Ulastirma Bakanligi, Havacilik Genel Mudurlugu
(The Civil Aviation Department of the Ministry of Transport)
