Calis Beach Attractions or Not !
« Reply #40 on: June 14, 2008, 17:20:49 PM »
I have been lots of resorts in Turkey and have stayed in Calis twice at Golden Moon dnd Mutlu, as has beem mentioned earlier, the Mutlu is a fab hotel, they really go out of there way to make you feel welcome, that goes for everyone I met in Calis,  inc bars/restaurants. I feel safe and comfortable there, which is why, this year, I am having a holiday alone and have decided to come back so I can chill in peace! There seems to be quite a few new bars etc opened, ie; Shamrock, think I may have a venture in on my own??

RE: the post about restaurants on front taking ownership of beach in front of them?
Last year I visited Bitez for 2 days, how they worked is, if you ate in their reataurant, for example breakfast, they had there own section of beach in front of their restaurant which, after your brekkie, you were entitled to use their sunbeds/umbrellas free of charge. This seemed to work well and at quiet times they even brought your drinks to you! The beach was very clean, the  sunloungers were cleaned every day and were very posh! Cream cotton, with padded headrests and arms, so so comfy!

RESULT??
Restaurants had your custom all day and we even stayed for tea one night
You had a lovely, clean, comfy sunlonger
The beach was very clean,
Good results all round, what do you think?

Have to agree Jenny1 - Bitez is another favourite place of ours in Turkey, along with Calis, although I think it has  be said there isn't as much hassle to eat in the resaurants in Calis.  We love Calis for the lovely, totally laid back, friendly feel as soon as you arrive, but the beach has to be a bit of a drawback.  We really liked the way you are looked after by the bar owners in Bitez, although you don't have to eat breakfast with them first.  Once they get to know you they will save the sunbeds nearest to the sea then serve you drinks all day assuming of course that you will probably have some lunch in their bar.  I'm sure that, given chance, the bar owners in Calis would give the same excellent service and keep their bit of beach clean and comfortable to get the tourists onto the beach and away from hotel pools instead of us paying 10.5 lira a day for two sunbeds and an umbrella on a not exactly brilliant beach.

Other than that, I can't really fault Calis, especially after visiting in May this year and seeing all the improvements that have been made, new shop fronts, roads and bridge(!!).  Just please let it stay as it is and not become over commercialised.

See you in September/October hopefully.

It's already happening in Calis with Kum City Beach Park keeping the beach clean in front of their bar and restaurant and offering free sunbeds and umbrellas (lots of them too) with drinks service on the beach. I am sure more bars and restaurants will want to follow suit. Even if it raises the prices a little I am sure it would be worth it.  8)

That's good to know Lindar, but to be fair when we use the beach we usually go in front of Cafe Soul.  No free sunbeds but the guys there do look after us very well. We usuallly have a coffee, lunch and a few drinks through the day.  Would certainly be a big improvement if more bars followed suit as you say.

I have been to Calis 10 times now - enjoyed every visit.
I like the weather and the people. I have met some interesting 'ordinary' Turkish people who give you the time of day and always make you feel welcome. Some are shopkeepers and some are local residents. I have also met several English people in Calis (ex pats) who also have been kind, thoughtful and very helpful for no reward and in a way I had no right to expect.
Everytime I visit Calis the place is different whether it be new sculptured roundabout, new traffic lights, a new tunnel, improved main drainage, better roads, upgraded shops or more subtle changes etc yet the people remain the same as before - friendly, interesting and respectful.
Strangely enough I often repeat the same activities everytime I go such as go to Oule Denize, walk at Kaya, go on boat trip and enjoy travelling on the dolmus. I still marvel at the experience and come home feeling privelaged.
There are some things I like a little less - the litter, too many bars for my liking some of which play music too loud in the day time to such an extent they can be heard in the adjacent restaurants and spoil the ambience. I feel safe and at home there - long may it continue.
