Istanbul Bomb - numerous casualties
« on: January 12, 2016, 09:35:52 AM »
Explosion this morning in Sultanahmet Square, at least nine dead and many injured.

JF

Edit: For anyone who knows the area, it was in the middle of the square close to the large obelisk.  Would have been busy with tourists and first reports suggest they are in the majority of casualties.

Hearing reports that a "media ban" has been imposed.  On the basis that every news agency in the world is running the story I really can't see what this will achieve, other than to make life difficult for local media and news agencies.

Closest significant incidents in recent years were probably the Kusadsi bus bombing in 2005 and the bombs in Marmaris in 2006.

There were bombs that was planted (and went off) in Fethiye in 1994. Thankfully no fatalities:

Well that should narrow it down to several hundred thousand that they let cross the entire country unchecked.

I couldn't drive 40 minutes to Dalaman Airport without getting pulled in...

It was running on several of the TV channels showing in Fethiye around midday today.

Based on the usual misinformation from RTE and his shoebox stuffers, it'll either be :

a) It didn't happen.
or
b) The Kurds did it.
