I am told that Han, Serkul 1 & Bambu have been closed for 'hassling' tourists. Another two also, don't know who they are.
If the likes of 'Ian Rush' talking to you is something you consider to be hassle, stay away from Altinkum [:o]
All three restaurants have guys outside doing a job, and doing it rather charmingly - I don't think I have ever been hassled in Calis - well not since Uzi moved on from Er-Oz ;)
-
OMG , What next, how long have they been closed for, and who is Rushy going to bore to death now, PMSL, if Uzzy was one of them.(well not really) but surprised if he's not.
-
LOL he was probably the first :D
Funny how he doesn't hassle now he is at his own restaurant.
Rushy normally bores me to death asking for a bad review (from over a year ago) to be removed from CBF. He's harmless, as most of them are - it's a real shame because their banter is part of Calis.
-
They r closed for 5 days.Its ridiculous.
-
I have never seen the scale of hassling in this areaa compared to other resorts like Altinkum. People wouldn't stand for it here.
Besides, if there was "significant" hassling going on in Calis, I am sure we would have had a major thread on here by now.
I am completely baffled just how these restaurants are supposed to make a living.
-
I wonder if they consider a bit of banter whilst walking past as Hassle, hope not.
-
I recall one restaurant, completely empty one night, with the front guy sitting resigned wth his feet up. A couple walked past, had a quick glance and carried on. What can you do to get them in? Not much perhaps.
The guy looked up at them, and said "You think my restaurant is rubbish, because there are no customers here". The couple immediately showed their British courtesy and assured him that they didn't think anything of the sort, and that they were further sure that is was a wonderful restaurant, just having an unlucky night. Within a minute he had called their bluff and they talked themselves into eating there without really knowing it.
When they sat down another couple decided to come in and soon it was quite busy.
That isn't hassle, that is class :)
-
Reminds me of the grand bazaar. I took a client in there once and every store was hassling in every language under the sun, walked past one and the guy sat down just looked at him and said "so would you like to buy something you dont need?"...my client went in and spent a fortune on bucket & spade crap.
-
I recall a jeweller in Gran Canaria who would greet women who dared to glimpse at his window with a cheery "Hello ladies, how are you tomorrow?".
After a week it was beginning to annoy me, but to each 'customer' it was most funny and once again, mission accomplished.
-
My daughter and her friend arrived yesterday and the 1st meal was to be a at Serkul 1. I hope it wasn't closed then.
-
;) Dont worry Elsa, loads more to choose from, the young ones never starve.:P
-
When we were there a few weeks back we saw some very official gentlemen walking up and down the prom. I was told they were checking that every table had a 'tab' on it - otherwise the owner would be find for tax evasion.
Seems they don't take kindly to friendly banter in Turkey. Rushie is a great guy who, charmingly, bores you to death. Also George from Serkul 1 manages to bring up his hair transplant every time we see him (he's had 2 now). I think he must be on commission from the surgeon.
Shame but I must admit on occasions we just want to walk along the prom without getting asked to sit down every 5 yards.
-
I used to dread the stroll along the prom because of the hassle, but over the years have accepted it as part of Calis life. It doesn't take much to be polite and friendly. I cringe when people totally ignore the "hasslers".

Stoop is luckier than most of us. If he understood Turkish he would know they are telling each other "Don't bother with that tight b*****d, he is on auto pilot to Oben Corner"
-
Hi we were in calis in may and we went to the bambu a few times the chap on the front with the tash was friendly not bad at all that is a shame :(
-
Mehmet and George hassling 'I dont believe it' what a load of rubbish. I personally quite enjoy a bit of banter and have never had any problems whilst walking along the front. If l haven't been going to eat in a particular resturant the 'hasselers' have said have a good evening and enjoy my meal wherever I may be eating.

Scunner - Oben corner is at the end we pass first!! I guess Geography was one you failed:D
-
No, I meant after you shared a chicken doner and were heading back
-
LOL - heading back for my free Brandy??: :)
-
B52 and MCM make up the set, I'm told.
-
I think its totally bonkers! Some of them do come on a bit too strong and they are Rushy and Uzzi ( who isnt hassling at all this year!) but nothing compared to Marmaris or Altinkum- or Hisaronu!!!
It seems someone in the Beldiye is determimed that Calis will never become too popular with tourists!
-
Conversation outside Bambu
[Hilary and I walking along the prom having just arrived at Calis].
Ian Rush: "Hello, don't you recognize me?".
Me: [Trying to remember] "Oh, yes, how are you?".
IR: "Are you going to come in and have a drink?".
Me: "No, we are walking the prom. Catch you on the way back".
IR: "OK. Have a good time".
I think the Belediye has to clamp down on this kind of over-intrusive harassment.
-
who closes these resturants, and on what grounds?
-
:)Agree Colwyn, I ended up walking over to him last year, because whilst customers were sitting there, he shouted quite loudly, and not in a nice manner, Would you think I have known these people for years and they don't come in my restuarant, I marched over in front of his customers and gave him a mouthful back, first time I have ever seen Rushy speechless, This year he was nice and polite and never invited us in, Job Done. ;)
-
That's a real shame. When I'm over with my 3 daughters (10,8 & 6), we take it in turns to pick the restaurant. You should see the faces of the guys on the promenade drop when they have to haggle with a 6 year old :D
They then offer the kids free ice cream/drinks/cartoons etc..to try and entice us in ! The girls love the banter !

I have been left to understand that the front men work on a 'commission' basis, been told 7.5% of the take, so its in their interest to pack em in. Is anyone able to corroborate this? In any event yes there are times when i don't want to be tackled and other times when I don't mind, but to close them !

Serkul 1 is having an Opening party this Sunday, as marked up outside as we strolled by today.

This was an attempt at heavy irony. But this is a dangerous tool, always liable to backfire. I don't believe that Calis has "hassle". At least not in the way I have experienced it elsewhere. If "Ian Rush" is currently the worst example in Calis then I suggest a quick visit to Side would give some perspective and demonstrate what serious harassment looks like - including callers-in (and carpet sellers) blocking your route and even laying hands on you to "encourage" a visit to their establishment. I have not yet been to Istanbul - but I am sure that Starman can tell about what real, professional hassle of tourists is like.
-
The restaurants don`t need frontmen to hassle you in.
All they need to do is, put a big pricelist outside with meals at half the price they are charging now.
They would still make a good profit and sell at least twice as much, so therefore they would take the same if not more money as they do at present.
I realise the price of chicken has risen quite a lot, but the restaurants in Koycegiz are still charging the same price as the did last year, because they know that by raising prices will mean less customers.

-
:oI agree with Crabbit :o :D
-
:) Ian Rush Is a pain in the proverbial, I am not taking that one back, Yes, we got a bit of hassle in Istanbul, but not from someone we have known for 20 years, who should know better, He knows the way people holiday, and what they want to do, at least he should by now, [^]
-
To be honest, I like Ian Rush but I stopped using whatever establishment he was in front of when he started sitting down beside me with 3D pictures and floor plans [:o]
You take your wife out for a romantic meal and end up with a gooseberry with a 'tache telling you all about some new project or other.
Note to anyone that meets me: I can talk about many subjects other than property you know, especially in the evenings and on Sundays ;)
-
[^]Exactly.

Easy Keith
moustaches were the rage in 1973 :D refer to wedding pics

I've heard that the Uzzy's restaurant 'The Mimoza' has been closed down under the great hassling clampdown. If it's the case, then I'm not in the least bit surprised. I wonder how that affects his full or half boarders in the hotel? Will they be prevented from eating there for five days :o
-
Walking past Bella Mamma's the other day, a rather fresh fish on display winked at me. They'll be next.
-
Was it a Gay b*****k .... :D:D ;)
-
No, I was trying to get my fags out of my pocket
-
:o
-
LOL :D:D:D:D ;)
-
I heard B52 and Aladdin's have also been shut for the same reason.
-
On a serious note, a walk down the prom can take a while just stopping and chatting for a minute or two with a number of the familiar faces. In doing so, are we exposing them to the possibility of closure - even if we made the first move?
It would be a sad Calis if all the guys we have got to know are too scared to say hello.

Isn't that the point though. Koycegiz doesn't get the number of visitors that Calis does - despite other threads implying that tourism is on the wane. Isn't it just a simple case of economics?Supply and demand? Of course its cheaper at the far end of the beach there aren't as many punters? Of course they look pleased to see you! You might be the only people they've seen for hours! Isn't it like anywhere else. Using Venice as an example. A cup of coffee in St Marks square will cost you upwards of a £5- go further into the back streets and you can get a 3 course meal with half a bottle of wine for £12. You dont get the views of St Marks basilica but value for money you get! [8)]

I must say that it was someting that bugged me at one time the old song and dance routine of "You come eat in my restaurant" "May be next time" or "I've just eaten thanks". But thinking about it, it would be quite a shame to see that taken away as its all makes up the personality of the place. Like everything else it will settle down once the Belediye get their teeth into someting else.

Should be a good party as they now have something very special to celebrate. Mehmet and Karen just had baby boy- Max Edward- 8lb 1oz ( This is Mehmet brother of owner, not new waiter) Congratulations to the whole family
-
cannot belive the places have been shut for 5 days :/
I hope nothing is closed when i am over there for a week in augst
-
:) I should think they will be more concerned about opening this week, not August,I have heard of them being closed for one day, but not five, Anyway congrats on their lovely news, and best of luck to The Serkul in the future. ;)
-
we went down on friday and noticed the gone fishing sign and thought it was odd
rushie has never hassled us or george or the others we know very well we look forward to their welcome and friendly banter.
they get the hassle off my hubbie ( rob ) about the turkish football teams
-
have any more resturants been shut down?
-
Just come back from a stroll down the beachfront. All restaurants /bars seem to be open. Not a lot of banter only chat we got was from the staff that know us.All the other bar/restaurant staff seem very quiet.
-
Sitting in Guvens bar (Oban 2) at the end of prom having a very cold Efes, it`s a bitch of a life but someones got to do it.
-
Talking to a guy who went to Marmaras last year and as he was window shopping he and his wife were asked in by the owner, after 10 minutes he went to leave the owner locked the door and wouldn't let them out until they bought something ( it was a leather shop ). They managed to get out and called the police but the owner was only warned.
That's what I would call hassling there's nothing wrong with a bit of banter as long as they don't try to force you. :)
-
yeaaah.
that never happends in calis with resturant or bars.
inless there all open now :)
-
They can lock me in a bar anytime:P
-
When is the next bar lock in - I for one would like to be there!! Back to the subject in hand, the banter along the front is all part of Calis but there are times when you just want to get to your destination without being stopped every 5 minutes, with this said Calis would not be Calis without it. Some restaurants do try to stop you more, Bambu being one of them, but its harmless certainly don't think they should have been closed for it. My little boy loves all the chat, does a good impression of the guys on the front, 'Look we ave childrens menu' 'Free icecream for the baby' etc etc comes back home and makes everyone laugh here with his rendition of what happens on Calis promenade. Maybe the authorities should take all this into account.
-
I personally dont have a problem with the banter on the front however a lot of tourists have told me they are put off by it and would rather go somewhere where they dont feel hassled.Anyway its not talking to customers that is the problem the places that were closed down had all been caught by an undercover team from Mu#287;la handing out written advertisements(cards flyers etc)which is illegal in turkey unless promoting a one off or rare event such as a concert
-
:) It looks like this has just been a warning for the rest of the season, to let them know they are being watched, So sounds like alls open and happy now, ;)
-
My son said they are looking at making it up to 16, or another 16 are waiting to hear, we'll soon find out, i think it's wrong, they are not on the main road to the prom, so all they are doing is handing out fliers showing where the bar is, not hassling, if you walk all the way up the prom, you get to seril 1, but you don't see daisy bar, is it so wrong to let people know there is a bit more after seril 1. How strange is that? That's a bit of a weird law becuase there's so many different aspects that need advertising and promoting. whether its a massive concert or a local band or a brand new chain store or a corner shop and they're going to get no where if they can't promote.
and i agree if someone is beeing locked in a store unless they buy something - that is hassling to the max. and hostage.
but what the barmen in calis are doing isn't really hassling, its just promoting and being friendly.
-
I haven't been to Calis since September 05 but have been 4 times in total. I have never ignored the hasslers and was always polite.
However, the guy from Georges (looks like Dustin Hoffman) would hassle us but we always politely declined. Then he took to ignoring/blanking us when we walked passed and said hello. There are so many places to eat in Calis and when you are only there for 2 weeks, you can't please everybody. I must say that I have missed the place and are thinking of coming back after trying Bulgaria twice last year and Spain in June of this year.
-
:oAnother sixteen, are they having a laugh, surely not, between digging the main roads up and closing down bars etc, are they trying to tell us something.:P
