Down the pan

What is the story with putting toilet paper down the pan in Turkey.    Is it an absolute no-no , or a no-no but everyone does it and it should be OK ,  or somewhere in between ?

Generally its best not to put it down the toilet. I believe it is because the pipes are narrow and block up easily, so you could have a horrible flood back up the loo.

with new builds as far as i know you can put it down the loo( we can with ours),but most of the restaurants and bars and hotels you put it in the bin

 :)It is best to put it in the bin to be on the safe side, the toilets usually have a notice asking that you do this, just remember not to wipe your nose on it first.

Ahh now that's just the point.   Years ago you saw these notices everywhere but I can't remember when I saw one last.    Maybe I don't go to the right toilets  

As an aside some toilet papers seem to virtually dissolve in contact with water so I wondered if that was part of the reason you don't see so many signs now (i.e.  it isn't such a problem now).  Sad to say I haven't conducted a scientific test but I should perhaps add it to my list
