In the Afghanistan capital 57 people were killed today trying to register to vote. Without looking it up ... does anybody remember why it was so important for us to invade Afghanistan in 2001 and what it was that we achieved?
-
To the tune of "Daylight come and me wanna go home" - "Hey Mr Taliban, hand over Bin Laden"
Wasn't it that? To bash Al Qaeda?
We achieved a dead Bin Laden.
Punishment for 9/11.
They haven't done it since so it must have worked.
-
Bin Laden wasn't in Afghanistan though
-
Weren't we looking in Afghanistani caves and such though?
Bit hazy on it all, really. Al Qaeda, Taliban - somebody had to pay for the American losses.
They're not used to terrorists on their soil - they're only used to paying for other terrorists to commit bombings on foreign soil.

If you ask the arms trade they will tell you it created thousands of jobs. ;) ( but thousands of corpses ) :(

Lithium.
-
Menthol - confused.com here :-[
-
I believe Menthol is referring to huge deposits of the the extremely important miners lithium occurring in Afghanistan.
-
Thanks Colwyn - not for the first, and definitely not the last, Menthol and your good self will have to pardon my ignorance.

Well just fancy that...
The U.S. military has had its eyes on Afghan mineral deposits for some time. A 2007 Pentagon memo that the New York Times quoted in a 2010 article says that Afghanistan could be the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” referencing the oil-rich monarchy that is a key U.S. regional ally.
“There is stunning potential here (in Afghanistan),” General David Petraeus said in the same memo.

I believe the Russians had similar ambitions at one time, 'til they their arse's kicked.

It's been reported that IS have claimed responsibility.

What is really sad is that we are so used to hearing about suicide bombs in that and other areas that we seem to be immune too it..It hardly warrants a mention on The news.
