You only need to go to Tax office if you are registering a UK phone for use in Turkey

Yep. No need to register a Turkish phone at the Maliye. Take your passport with you to the shop. Buy the phone, Off you go.

Remember if you take it home to the U.K. and don't use it for 3 months you will have to get a new sim, when you return to Turkey, this happened to us in May.  Best to leave it with someone in Turkey, which we have now done.

How on earth does that happen ?
We purchased the phone 2 weeks ago and haven't even used it yet, but intend to on our return at the end of October.
How do they know if the phone has been out of the country in the meantime ? (were we followed ?   ;) )

Just found out when we returned and the phone was off.  Had to go and buy a new Sim. (for which we needed our passport). I don't think they know it has been out of the country, but they know if you have not used it in Turkey.  Have been told by friends that it must be used or after 3 months the Sim will not work.
We have left it with someone in Calis who will look after it for us and make sure the Sim is fine.

Technically you only have to top up a Turkcell prepay sim every 270 days for the line to remain active for incoming calls.
In the old days it was 90 days, but now it has to be topped up every 180 days to keep the line active for outbound and inbound calls.
From day 181 it goes into a 90 day Semi-Active period when it will only be able to receive incoming calls, but on day 271 it will be disconnected. You will also be unable to keep that number as it goes back into the Turkcell system.

You are unable to make an outgoing call if you haven't topped your phone up within 6 months of your previous top up. If you dial 8091 the message that is played will give you your current credit and the date that you have to top up by to keep your line active.

I leave my Turkish phone with someone in Turkey and they keep it active for me
