Post by: Lotty on October 18, 2015, 11:24:21 AM
Hi, can anyone please tell me the name of the very strong, tasty,  crumbly cheese sometimes served with walnuts in restaurants?  Also is there one similar to strong cheddar?   :)

Izmir Tulem is the nearest cheese to English Cheddar, please try before you buy.  There is a hard dried one and a creamier one.  Bergamont cheese also very similar to cheddar, but I can only find it in the fish market.  There is also lots of crumbly cheese.  All the markets have a much better selection that the supermarkets.

Thank you so much Busybee! A friend staying in Kalkan emailed to ask, I knew the forum would come up trumps!  ;D

No idea what that one is called Lotty, but we always go to the Calis Market and visit the same guy each year for yoghurt and cheese. Phil really loves that strong crumbly cheese and this guy always has it and always offers samples before we buy.  Strange thing is, it all looks the same and he has no labels on it.  I think we must ask next time just what it is called.

I think the crumbly cheese you mean is çökelek. Smells and tastes very strong.
