Title: Where to start???
Post by: Gilly1 on January 03, 2016, 15:39:39 PM
Hi, We have had out villa in Ovacik for over 10  years now and we think this year,  the time is right to spend nearly all out time in Turkey. Now that the rule has change about bringing a car to Turkey (and can leave it there for 2 years) we have decided to drive over, stopping in the different countries on the way and make an adventure of it just taking our time. We will obviously get residency but just don't know how to go about it regarding entering the country. Do we get a tourist visa and apply for residency  once we are there, or apply online before we start? We would like to bring some household items with us making use of the space in the car (no electricals) but I believe you have to be a resident to do this would this apply to small  items such as mirrors, coffee table stools etc. Its all so confusing we don't know where to start. We would be so grateful for any advise which way to turn to make our trip as hassle free as possible. Thanking you in anticipation.

Think you would apply for tourist visa to enter then apply for residency when you are here. Have not heard anything about not being allowed goods in unless it is a new rule. Good idea is to check Doc Martin on Facebook. Nice guy and very knowledgeable.

Wish I could advise but I'm sure someone here will be along soon to offer some guidance.  Sounds very exciting  :)

Thanks for all your replies, I did read that you had to be a resident to bring household items  in but thought that they meant container loads or electricals. I would just be filling the car with things like mirrors, small tables and a rug or two. It will be an exiting trip and intend taking our time and just stopping when we fell like it.

Just a bulk standard road atlas of Europe is sufficient.

Another alternative is to plan your route using either Google Earth or Via Michelin and then print it.

It's quite a simple route really. Draw a straight line from Calais to Istanbul and there are 2 or 3 lane roads virtually all the way.

Just make sure you've got enough Euros and TL with you to cover the various tolls and vignettes to be paid at the borders. Oh, and make sure your Green Card definitely covers you for Turkey. Not all do.

Also try Jim Fraser, who is a member here.  He moved to Fethiye from Scotland and drove a van all the way across with lots of household stuff, so he can give you good advice.  Just p.m him on CBF.

I would ask the inspector on here. Laws change so fast, or are implemented in different ways, so anyone who has driven in the past might have been governed by now out of date rules, the inspector will probably have up to date info. He can also help you with residency once you are here.

Also, keep in mind that the Winter's are very cold in Ovacik and if in the past you have only visited in Summer, you should perhaps try a long Winter there before you make a total break from the U.K.
A lot of Villas are made for just Summer visits and not really all around the year places to live.  So make sure you have really good insulation and heating in the place.  We all know about the cold after reading posts from other members who have moved over and had problems keeping warm in their Villas.   Good luck.

Jim Fraser moved to Fethiye several years ago and things have changed a lot since then. Ask the Inspector, he'll have up to date information and will also know about possible future changes.

There are lots of routes that you can take-

We have never felt the need to go as far as Istanbul.

in the past we have had the truck loaded up with small personal items and sailing stuff and has always been ok, just be prepared to  have to unpack at certain borders ( maybe )

Remember to check with whichever countries you choose to pass through wether they require you to obtain a " vignette" to enable you to drive on certain roads in that country. This is really important as There are hefty fines and penalties to pay immediately ( at the roadside ) if you get caught out without a relevant pass!

Remember to pass through France you need to carry your OWN breathalyser equipment as well as a European road safety set including warning triangles, high vis jackets for both driver AND passenger.....And depending when you will travel some countries will insist on snow chains, fines for non compliance again.........

Can advise on routes and places to see/stay en route if you're interested, we always take our time and visit loads of exciting and interesting countries..... Serbia and Croatia and Bulgaria ( but stay out of Sofia and Plovdiv ) recommended!

This is a link from another forum, it's an old thread but there are experiences and sample routes of various members which might be informative for you to digest. All info helps when you are planning a trip like this, it's worth knowing all old info so you can then go forwards and check its relevance now.

I don't think the route he took would have changed much.

The winter this year is very cold in Fethiye and Calis, not just in Ovacik! Coldest I have known.

Original V5(C) or registration document proving ownership if not a UK registered vehicle , Insurance Certificate including Green Card (make sure that Turkey is definitely included), Passport.

It's a good precaution to have European Breakdown cover that includes all of Turkey.

Not 100% sure but I think you need the original V5(C) and I don't think a rental company would let you have that.

It's a bit hit and miss with checking of cars, but a van's contents would definitely be checked.

Getting closer until we start the journey/drive....
Rental company has said they will let us have V5 should we need it or if they are unable to get us a green card for turkey which we have been told we can get at the border if we need to,  question I have if anyone can help is what is the easiest way to buy the ferry ticket from Italy to Greece crossing? And guidance appreciated.
