Ref says he played 'advantage' but in that case he could have pulled it back and given a free kick. It happens all the time in attacking play so why not defensive?

Advantage Rule:

Rather than stopping play, the referee may allow play to continue if doing so will benefit the team against which an offence has been committed. This is known as "playing an advantage". The referee may "call back" play and penalise the original offence if the anticipated advantage does not ensue within a short period, typically taken to be four to five seconds. Even if an offence is not penalised due to advantage being played, the offender may still be sanctioned for misconduct at the next stoppage of play.

It did benefit "the team against which an offence has been committed" that is if the ref never saw the handball? the ref was allowing play to continue over a penalty claim.

Should the assistant have seen the handball and informed the ref? "yes". If the assistant did then the ref decided to give a goal for reasons only he can say.

Play to the whistle and you would eliminate some of the confusion.

The thing that disgusted me about the whole thing was that when told by the ref to "Go away", the Spurs players did exactly that but then allows Rio to stand and shout at both ref and assistant whilst trying to conclude their decision. Not happy at the ref allowing the goal, Rio then continues to scream at the assistant whilst a Spurs player gets booked????????????

Arsenal done well though!!:D

I totally agree with you fletch Rio. The contrast about the Spurs players being told to go away but Rio being "allowed" to rant at both officials was very striking. After all he must have run or walked 70 yards to get there in the first place.

Di Canio gets 11-match ban for push on ref

The Italian footballer Paolo Di Canio, who pushed a referee to the ground during an English Premiership match last month, has been banned for eleven games by the English Football Association.

An FA discplinary panel also imposed a fine of sixteen-thousand dollars for the offence, which happened after the player was sent off by the refere,e Paul Alcock.

The Italian has been suspended since the incident by his club, Sheffield Wednesday.

Di Canio's actions caused uproar in the British press, and the Sports Minister Tony Banks asked the FA to impose a heavy punishment.

I remember that - not really bad sportsmanship but naughty all the same. Just had another look and to be honest a 3 year old child would have pushed harder. PMSL:
