Cheap Texting (UK-Turkey-UK) Option
« on: May 30, 2013, 23:32:18 PM »
This is actually quite good. Bear with me...

If you find yourself in the UK texting someone in Turkey, it is not cheap. I get 5000 free texts a month but the ones I send to Turkey cost me 24p each.

If you are the opposite way, in Turkey but texting people back home in Blighty, that too can be expensive.

Fishtext
(stupid name I know) is 2p per text to Turkey and 2p per text to UK from Turkey.

The real beauty of this over some alternatives is that you send the text to the recipients phone, where it arrives as a text. They reply on their phone like they normally reply to a text and send it and it arrives on your phone as a text. You get the idea, it doesn't appear in an app, they don't need to have Fishtext at all, you don't need to have a program on your pc - it's texts sent as texts and replied as texts. But 2p each.

Anyway, you get 20p credit for free (not much but it's 10 texts for nowt so you can try it out) - and if you are a big texter to or from Turkey, that's going to save a lot of cash.

If you want to give it a go... http://www.fishtext.com/

I should add that it works from and to pretty much any country, not just UK and Turkey  :)

That sounds really good Keith, will look into it.

Another way is by using an app called Whatsapp when connected to wifi ( or contract Internet if you have a bundle for the SIM card of the country you're sending from)
All the people in the conversation need to have the app installed on their phones.
You text in exactly the same way but send when connected to wifi and its totally free.
You can send photos and record your voice too.

Must check that out! I tend to use WhatsApp or Line if I can get a wifi connection (or i-message or facetime if I am sending to another iphone/ipad user) but the option of a 2p text is excellent. Could save a few bob on my credit this summer.

Wish I'd seen this a few weeks ago.  Just got my bill for our 16 days in Calis, and at 40p per text it's not cheap!!   :o

Will look into it for next time though. thanks Scunner.

I think a big advantage of this is that we all know people with a chunky old Nokia (usually our dear old mums) and their communications knowledge peaked with SMS messages - to them this is nothing new, just a text arriving in normal fashion and they reply as they usually do.

Also will be good for contacting people who bought a cheap basic moby in Turkey after their smart phone got blocked.

This might be me but I downloaded the app for my iphone. How do I get it on our cheap Turkish moby then?
