I think this is a story most rags have run one year or another.

The advice on travel to Turkey hasn't much changed in a long time - the addition is because there is an election and any tourist who wants to join a crowd for that needs their head read.

No news here.

I think this is a story most rags have run one year or another.

The problem in the UK is that certain elements of the press appear to have a fondness for sensationalising the risks involved when travelling to Turkey.

Yes, the FCO have issued fresh guidelines, as they do every time there is an election or other event that could raise tensions in a country that has suffered from several terror related incidents over the past few years.  They did it for May Day, they did it for New Year and so on.

That said, it is valid advice.  If you are travelling to Istanbul (or any other major city) then it does no harm to be a bit careful and avoid any election related gatherings, you just don't know how the Polis or opposing supporters will react.  These situations can escalate very quickly and become extremely dangerous - I know, I've seen it happen on more than one occasion over the years.  If you are unfortunate enough to get caught up in something, don't be a spectator, head for the nearest shop/bar/restaurant/whatever and get inside.  Thats the best advice that the FCO don't tell you   :)

However, the Fethiye area (where most folks on here will be travelling to) has traditionally been fairly restrained when it comes to issues of serious public order.  The cynic in me has always thought that one reason is due to the reliance of many locals on tourists and foreigners in general - they don't want Fethiye in the headlines, for the wrong reasons!

No doubt the Express, Daily Fail et al will be publishing their anti Turkey articles soon, cherry picking from the FCO advice and publishing it completely out of context, as they usually do.

I agree it would be helpful if the tabloids qualified their articles to mention that demo's are more likely in cities etc and giving a more rational overview.
The DM published their annual Turkish click bait yesterday. I would not advice anybody with high blood pressure to view it, especially the comments section which is infested by plankton to put it kindly.
Meanwhile in London a comedian was robbed/mugged on the school run, with one of his children sat in the car. The murder count in the capital is pushing 70 so far this year.  I know where I feel safer.
