Title: What Do I Do With This?
Post by: WordBird on September 01, 2014, 14:02:54 PM
Friends who were over for the summer have returned to the UK, and kindly donated the contents of their food (and drinks  ;D ) cupboards to us before they left their villa.

This bag of....whatever it is was among the items. My friend said her husband was persuaded to buy it at the market while while buying pancakes to make borek, but he couldn't understand what he was supposed to do with it so they never opened/used it.

I'm not sure how clearly the picture will show the contents, but it's a bag of small orange granules with some flecks of red and green (which I assume are chillis and/or herbs). Presumably something I can do with it when using the pancakes....but what?

Any ideas? Thank you.   :)

Could it be for Lentil soup.?

If it is you've hit the Jackpot. Take a small quantity to the
spice stalls on the markets.

Have you opened the bag and tasted the stuff? Is it sweet or spicy or savoury?

Thank you one and all  ;D and especially Philrose.
I think you're right. It doesn't have a strong taste and the consistency fits, although I wouldn't have guessed breadcrumbs.
Fantastic. Another bag of tricks for my ingredients cupboard. :-)

The picture is too small for me to see clearly but from your description I would say that it is tarhana.
It's a dried wheat with vegetables and yoghurt, used for making soups.

Yes, I would say definitely for making Tarhana soup. Red pieces could be either tomatoes or peppers.
