I am very pleased to announce that the Mother and Baby Room is now open. It has been an enjoyable experience for all the Uzumlu Ladies who gave, time and effort.   A big thank you goes to Julie, Aytan and Guri and their workforce who helped to make it possible and also to Trevour and Colin who raised some of the money.

Look out for the next issue of The Land of Lights.

Heres a discussion for you, at the moment we have the possibility of two projects on the table that we are considering, why not vote and give us your imput

1. De-fibralator
2. Play-grounds.

If you would like to see one of the above started as our next project tell us which one and why.

K. x

Can we all join in this discussion?

I do have a question - do you mean a heart defibralator? Just the one?

My 2 year old wants me to vote for a playground please. I think looking at the sparse and broken playground in the centre of the village it will certainly be something for everyone if it also has the sports type equipment you see in play grounds around Fethiye hopefully the local Belediye would contribute!
But also as a feel free to comment, just to throw a view on the heart defibralator this would be a vital piece of equipment BUT will it be available to all in an emergency or stored in the clinic when the chances it will be available when actually required is slimmer, also it is a specialist piece of equipment, how many people will be able to use it? Sorry I have heard first hand the horror and tragic stories on supposed trained professionals attending here in Uzumlu, pregnant Ambulance Crew who cannot assist carry patients, untrained crew who are only drivers, staff's children riding in the cab meaning the victim's family cannot go with them in the ambulances and Nurses who cannot provide any where near the same standard as the UK through lack of training.I note police officers, public transport staff, work First Aiders, Fire Officers and many others are trained in use of this equipment in the UK as obviously minutes are vital to cardiac arrest victims and the use of defibulators is of the essence in it's application and would suggest that volunteers who can use it are sought if legal and possible in Uzumlu again if easy access is available? Perhaps it should be stored with the Jandarma where 24 hour access is available? Sorry this may have already been discussed and agreed by the Uzumlu Ladies if purchased. I have added this in mind of the fairly recent tragic death of a Uzumlu resident through some of the above incompetence of the emergency services on their attendance. If purchased my sister would be happy to train anyone in it's use as a current LAS Paramedic when she is over here.

As a possible future project I did my research and approached the Doctors with many questions.

And he said that they would be prepared to come out at any time day or night because thats whats the equipment is for.

So it was very positive feedback.

We have discussed the possibility of asking the skilled proffesionals in the village to use it, but we dont know where we would stand on insurance etc, so I think the de-fib kept and used from the Doctors is a good idea. There are two Doctors and a nurse and already trained in the use of.

There are 3 playground areas in Uzumlu, by the school, top of village past the winehouse and at the Uzumlu Park. All in need. Thank you for your comments.

We approached the Baskan and answers as follows to the playground areas.

They dont get any help from Fethiye
They would provide free labour if we wanted to sort them.

Havnt asked the question yet if he will help towards cost.

Hope this helps.

In our July Newsletter I am printing and distributing this week in and around the village I have written all the information about the Clinic opening times, and phone numbers etc.

Also just for your information,

The Doctor informed me that all Ambulances are equipped with De-fibs.
The driver is just a driver.
The other person is a fully qualified medic trained(paramedic)His words.
On phoning for an ambulance the first one would arrive from Camkoy, if not available then from Kemer and then from Fethiye.

So I think the de-fib if we buy one is at a closer position at the clinic.

Thank you Kay, appreciate you would have done research, I trust from your reply this means the Doctor(s) live in Uzumlu? Seen this on the Uzumlu Ladies web site: Doctor Dare (lives In) 6655013 Out of Hours Only - 05052345659
As you see from my post on a tragic medical response in the village which has left a lot of people very upset and angry about expecting medical response to be capable of doing all they possibly can, it is a obvious needed addition. I just wouldn't like to think that someone else loses a possible chance with their life if this vital equipment is locked away without access in an emergency or having to wait a vital period of time for one of the Doctors to get it out and use it thus my Jandarma suggestion. But good to hear from you this was addressed and sorted with the Doctors.

I would like to comment about the idea for a children's play ground; more about the process really.

If this is the project that is decided upon my suggestion is to consult and involve the children and young people about what they would like and facilitate consultations that enable them to speak for themselves without interference from adults.

Or, perhaps the starting point could/should be what children and young people would like to see in Uzumlu without presuming that a playground is what they want.

Children and you people can be far more creative and resourceful than adults and understand their own needs better than anyone.

If they are involved in the decision making processes any money raised will be more likely to be well spent because of this.

Continuing to involve the children and young people in fundraising events and any and all other activities related to achieving the "end result" including choosing and possibly building equipment develops their skills and knowledge in so many ways.

Anyway, just my thoughts:   :)
