Accommodation Tax 2020
« on: November 01, 2019, 16:53:54 PM »
Have seen on another site that the Turkish government are bringing in an accommodation tax next year, this will apparently apply for all hotels (and possibly Villas/apartments ?).  It would be paid separately to the hotel and wil, vary as to the standard of the hotel, ie 5 star/boutique hotels 18 lira per person,  per day,  4 star 12 lira,  3 star 9 and 1 or 2 star  6 lira.  Anyone know if this is actually the case or just a rumour, as it will certainly be quite an extra cost along with the increased visa price and high flight costs. Hopefully it is just a rumour !

Added to the ridiculous price of flights and the increase in the cost of the Visa, they are certainly deterring people from visiting Turkey.  VERY unwise.

Do you remember a couple of years back when they introduced the guest registration scheme that meant people stopped illegally renting their villas avoiding tax and flouting regulations ?

At the time it was predicted on here that this would have dire consequences on tourism.

The next two years actually saw a significant increase in tourist numbers.

I have a feeling that this new tax ( which is applied in many other countries ) will have a miniscule impact on numbers.

People believing that Turkey is fighting a war just around the corner from where they will be staying is more likely to have an impact. Do you remember, bird flu, terrorism, failed coups, state of emergency ? All these things were soon followed by a drop off in numbers.

Image counts for a lot.

The accomodation tax has been passed by parliament with amendments. it will now be 2% of the daily accomodation charge applicable to all tourists, (except those under 12), irrespective of the class of the hotel, motel, pension, camp site, guest house etc that they are staying in.

The President has also been given the authority to increase the tax whenever he wants. The funds collected from the tax will go directly to the government.
