"Portrait of a Turkish Family" by Irfan Orga. One of the best books I have ever read.
A more weighty tome is "Ataturk" by Kinross for info about the rise of modern Turkey.

yes I really enjoyed 'Portrait of a Turkish family' too.  A good read.
