Title: Freeview Boxes
Post by: pauline on April 07, 2011, 10:03:37 AM
Hi All,
I understand these are available at a one-off cost.  Does anyone have any experience of these, do they have any english channels and if so what are they like?  Currently have Digiturk but (apart from them keep reducing the available channels)its a bit expensive for the 10/15 weeks a year we are currently there.

Any information would be much apprecated.
Thanks

From what I know, Freeview boxes will not work in Turkey

A FreeSat box might work if you have a large enough dish.

I think the question is about a free to view box rather than Freeview as we know it in the UK. There is a topic about this here: {A Link to an old CBF topic was here - no longer available}39605

Hi Pauline, are you looking for channels which broadcast in English or for specifically English programs?

We have a system called NILESAT, which gives us hundreds of channels about 15 to 20 of which are in English most of the time, i.e. BBC World, CNN, Aljazeera, Press TV, MBC 2 & 4, MBC Action, Fox Movies, Fox Series, Dubai 1,  Infinity, Panorama Action, and more. Adds up to about 4 news channels and the others are mainly films. Not all the film ones are English ALL the time but it gives you a pretty fair choice.

We DON'T get Corrie or Eastenders or anything like that, but you buy the sat dish and box for a one off payment and that's it. We've had ours for over 3 years and are quite happy with it. No idea how much it would be now, I think it was about 450TL when we had ours.

For Nilesat free to air channels you only need a standard decoder and standard dish this would get the channels above if you wanted Showtime TV also broadcast through Nilesat you would need a subscription.

Thanks Posleeds, but to be honest we haven't missed them in 3 years and probably wouldn't recognise any of the characters now.

My neighbours recently bought a free to view box from Kipa & called Ufuk to install the dish, around 400tl in total. They have a good number of English language channels & no monthly subsciption.

In April 2009 the satellite has been repositioned to 16° East as Eurobird 16. Orbital slot at 7° West has been replaced with the new Hot Bird 10, known as Atlantic Bird 4A:D:D:D: :) ;)

Nilesat is the name of the satellite package (basically it is the middle east version of SKY).

We got our system from the satellite shop next to the 4 Seasons in Ovacik. He came and fitted it straight away.
If you're not in Ovacik any satellite shop will be able to sort you out, the whole package cost 230TL (so you know if you're being ripped off)

Thanks again for all your help. Now have Nilesat fitted - looking good!!  Now all I need is programme guide and we would be cooking, do they have such things here???  Meanwhile its random selection and hope for the best.  Still good though.

don't think there is a program guide (possibly online?).

my installer moved most english popular channels to the front of the list, then I slowly went through what was available and moved the rest as I wanted from channel 246 to 28 for example.

work out how to move channels and arrange as per my list in a previous post is a good start.

thanks superpp, yes they did move them for us which I thought was very helpful.  They were brilliant and very prompt.  Haven't worked out how to get programme guide up yet but will persevere, we are currently just scrolling though with up arrows!!  Dont wont to mess the settings up.

Very pleased with the whole set up though so thanks to everyone for their assistance.

Digiturk also took cancellation very well (I was surprised!!).  :)

Be careful Pauline...solicitors (on behalf of Digiturk) often come calling for money months/years after you have cancelled the contract with them!!Oh and you have to pay the solicitors fees too!! Commonly known as 'the Dodgeyturk scam'.

Thanks for the warning, good to know these things.  Once again the Forum is a font of all knowledge, would be lost without it.

Thanks a lot.
