Wireless
« on: December 28, 2013, 18:15:40 PM »
As you may have read, my laptop packed up.

I have an old one (Dell) which comes up with my network but won't connect to the internet when I click on it. I have entered the WEP thingie.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Is wifi switched on at the laptop H. Normally shows up as either a blue light or a symbol on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. It's usually a manual on/off switch or a software switch in control panel.

Does any other device or computer connect? Sometimes your computer sees the wireless router and so it appears it's connected when in fact the router may not be properly logged onto your BT account. You should probably have 4 LEDs illuminated on your wireless router if it's working properly?

H, don't let me mislead you by thinking I've any idea what I'm talking about here, but trying to help.

H, are you using a BT modem? sounds like you have either signed up or registered in the past (accidentley of course)    so try the following.

Go to start menu and click on Control Panel,  when open click on Network Sharing Centre and click Manage Wireless Networks.  Right click on the BT Openzone listing and any others you are are not or do not use, and then select Remove Network.  you will then have to connnect to the one which you do want if the computer does not pick up immediately.
I can only think that you may have last used this computer before the newer modem.

I am trying to keep this simple for you,  what system is the old Dell,  window 5, 6, or 7  XP?
what wireless connections can you see, yours and neighbour?

right click the wireless ladder in the right hand corner click properties.  what do you have?

Loz

Despite quite the funniest telephone conversation in the history of telecommunications, I regret to inform you that whilst I could get connected with the cable I still cannot without it.

Pardon?  can't wait till the next call.

Out of the garbled call we have deduced that the system is XP, next we need to see if the drivers are there,  now that should be fun, but not as much fun as it will be if they are.
H bite the bullet and buy a new one and save us all from going insane!   :)
