Title: Getting off the dolmus
Post by: agazina on August 12, 2004, 08:12:54 AM
I saw a funny incident the other day on the dolmus into work.
now there are several ways of saying you want to get off in Turkish and one of them is 'inecek var' meaning 'there is someone getting off'.
the other day there was this canadian who wanted to get off and said 'inek var' means 'there is a cow'. funny because everyone on the dolmus started looking around (middle of istanbul) for a cow.
when I first moved out here in 92 I was confused what to say to get off has there are so many ways to say this.
what do you say?

duribillirmisiniz (very polite, can you stop) would be a better way of saying stop but not many locals say that.

inecek var is better (in-eh-jek var) , or another one which might be easier is 'bu site bir yerde'

How do you pronounce 'bu site bir yerde'? I think I've heard it 100 times but the Turkish seem to miss off the bu and the start of the phrase (site) comes out as sigh or side. Is that right because I thought 'i' was always pronounced as 'in' not as 'eye'? (Does that make sense?)

pronounce it like its written site as in building site & yerde as in yer-de.
the i with the dot is pronounced as you would say the letter e, the one i without a dot is pronounced similar to uh.
dont know if that makes sense to anyone.

Makes sense to me Steve- thanks- though whether I'll remember it the next time is doubtful!! We did Turkish lessons, spent a fortune and can pronounce the letters of the alphabet perfectly - especially that funny g! Its been enormous help- not! At least we tried....

I have been listening to what the locals in Marmaris say when they want to get off the dolmus. I have no idea what is means but it sounds like

Moo Side Bee Ide Em,

I am too frightened to say it, in case it comes out wrong and I end up saying something insulting.

So I stick with STOP PLEASE

I am Turkish and I don't know what 'bu site bir yerde' means! If I were you I would stick to:'inecek var lutfen'.

You can also add 'burada' (here), or 'durakta' (at the stop), or 'gelecek durakta' (at the next stop) Examples:

Burada inecek var lutfen
Durakta inecek var lutfen
Gelecek durakta inecek var lutfen.

Hope this helps.

Oh I think I know what you mean now by 'bu site bir yerde' !!!

I think what you are trying to say is 'müsait bir yerde'. Which literally means:
(I'd like to get off) somewhere convenient!!!!!! So you say:

'müsait bir yerde lütfen'

we have been using the dolmus almost every day for the last two years and we always say what sounds like "side bir yarde". Whch we assumed meant we would like to get off at the nearest stop.
