Hi, below is a copy of a press release regarding this year's Calis Carnival which will appear in tomorrow's Land of Lights. It details all of the dates and times of events taking place in Calis throughout the carnival week.
"Calis Beach welcomes the summer season in festive style when the 5th Calis Carnival take place at the end of this month.
Calis Publicity and Tourism Association Chairman and organiser of the event, Mete Ay, has just announced the exciting programme for this years colourful extravaganza which take place from 30 May to 2 June. In addition Calis based children's charity the 3C's, are holding a series of fundraising activities before and after the 3 days festivities to compliment the main Carnival programme.
This year's carnival main sponsor is the Lokman Hekim Esnaf Private Hospital in Fethiye who, with support from Manzara Construction and the Calis Association, will be funding many of the events including the final evening concert where the headline band will be the one of the best selling and best known bands in Turkey, Istanbul band Yeni Türkü. Popular local band Shadow will be opening the concert.
With events as varied as oil wrestling, a kite flying festival, street musicians, exhibitions and a craft market to a colourful fancy dress procession, music concerts, a pirate boat trip and a photography competition with a 1000TL prize there is something at this year's carnival to appeal to everyone, young and old alike.
This year's carnival theme is the Sea and many of the activities during the week reflect this theme.
The programme kicks off on Sunday 27th May when the 3C's hold their annual Spring Street fair and craft market. This popular event takes place in the main street in Calis between the Dolphin junction and the water taxi bridge. Over 100 stalls will set up along both sides of the road which will be closed to traffic for the day and will be selling a huge range of crafts and handmade goods. The market will be open from 11.00 to 17.00 pm and all net profits from stall fees and the 3C's charity stall will go to help fund children's projects in the Calis/Fethiye area.
For all budding Jack Sparrows in the area, there will then be a day of skulduggery on the high seas on Wednesday 30 May when the 3C's second event, a "Pirates of the Mediterranean" boat cruise takes place. Tickets and full details of this themed cruise will be announced shortly.
The three day carnival event organised by the Calis Association commences on Thursday 31 May. During the day their will be a beach football tournament on Calis beach. This will be followed at 18.30 by a Carnival cocktail opening ceremony at the sunset viewing terrace at the entrance to the promenade. The winner of the photography competition will be announced and there will then be a classical music concert. Later in the evening there will be musicians and street dancers performing along Calis promenade.
The photography competition is open to all ages and the photo subject is "Calis". Entries should be submitted to Mete Ay at Golden Moon Estate Agency Office in Calis. Photos can either be handed in or copied to a cd or memory stick. The closing date for entries is Friday 25 May.
Friday 1 June will see a tug of war competition on the beach starting at 10.00 am. In the afternoon there will free children's entertainment at the Calis Aquapark where there will be clowns, face painting and stone painting and youngsters will have the chance to take part in a trial dive in the swimming pool.
In the evening the main road from the dolphin junction to the water taxi bridge will be closed to traffic from 17.30 and there will be an oil wrestling show and folklore dancing.
There will also be a seminar on "Water and The Sea" at the sunset terrace at 18.30. where speakers Alihsan Emre and a representative from Deniztemiz/TURMEPA (Sea Cleaning Association) will be taking about marine protection and other environmental issues.
Popular Medecezir Group will be performing on the terrace later in the evening and there will also be street musicians and entertainers performing along the promenade.
Carnival Day takes place on Saturday 2 June. Throughout the day there will be an exhibition of crafts in the Belediye gardens next to the Mutlu Hotel and from 11.00 until 14.00 there will be children's entertainment including a kite flying festival on the beach near the Sat restaurant.
The carnival parade will assemble in the car park next to the Sat restaurant from 15.00 and the colourful procession of fancy dressed walkers and colourful floats, all depicting this year's theme of the sea, will set off along the promenade at 16.00 to the sunset terrace where the route will turn right over the water taxi bridge and up to the dolphin junction. It will then turn and return to the promenade finishing at the stage area in the car boot car park. Children from many of the local schools as well as local organisations and charity groups will be taking part in the parade and anyone is welcome to enter.
Immediately after the parade there will be an entertainment show by the children at the stage area. There will then be a break whilst the stage is set up for the carnival evening concert which starts at 20.00
The final event concluding the carnival will be on Wednesday 6 June when the 3C's hold their annual Promises Auction on Calis Seafront. This is the premier fundraising event of the Calis charity's year and all money raised from the auction goes directly to help the children in the local area.
