Title: Containers
Post by: Pi55y on July 14, 2006, 01:23:00 AM
Does anyone know what the normal size of a container is for shipping furniture etc to Turkey and also the cost of the same.  We have heard of people having half a container - does anyone know how you can go about sharing?

There are 3 sizes.
20 foot.........holds 33 cubic meters gross
40 foot.........holds 67 cubic meters gross
40 foot high cube...holds 72 cubic meters gross

Sharing a container is what they call LCL or groupage. slower then a normal container as it has to wait for others to fill the container up. Also there is the truck option where you can send your goods via road instead of sea. customs is generally a lot less harsher this way and you dont have to pay excessive port fees when shipping via truck.

We paid about £2,400 for a half-sized container about 2 years ago.

Just to stress as I know KKOB's shipment, that if you pack yourself, load the container yourself, unload and unpack yourself then you can get things over quite cheaply.
But there are other costs namely THC, SIT, import taxes and then maybe some air money (back hander)
If the goods come by truck then you do save on the THC (Terminal handling charges).

Also as a further note, PBO's (packed by owner) items are generally very difficult if not impossible to insure.

THC depends on the load. An LCL shipment could be between 200-400 USD and a 40ft container could be as much as 600 USD but it all depends on the SS line as they all have different rates.
As for the truck option, there is only one company that does removals in specialised furniture trucks that does the UK-Turkey route. There are other truck companies that load but then you would still need to sort out delivery etc as those other truck companies only go between hubs and wouldnt normally deliver to your door.

Have you got the name of the company that does the overland route?
Thanks

Starman,

I can't find any contact detail in your profile. I am intereseted to know the overland company details to see if it is viable for our impending move.

We used Dolphin movers. They do door-to-door. Pack yourself or they do everything. They use a company called Soyer to move your stuff from Izmir to here. They will also come to your house (free of charge)and estimate the cubic footage of your stuff. Insurance is a pain in the a*se - we used the crossed-fingers method. !!!

I work in the freight industry and dealing with Turkish customs can be a bloody nightmare - grease my palm and that type of thing does go on. It is difficult to find a haulage company to take personal effects too so best to go with a company like sumerman.
But by all means if you want to get some ideas of prices for 20' & 40' containers, then here are a few links.

and finally a link to a source we use in the trade, The Lloyds loading list
