Title: Has anyone driven to Ankara
Post by: Old Daffodil on May 31, 2009, 20:51:00 PM
I would like to visit Ankara and wondered if anyone has driven it in their own vehicle and if so was the road ok and what route did you take? I understand it takes about five hours by road.
Also could you recommend a good place to stay in the city?

I've driven there a couple of times and the roads are fine. I used the Isparta, Afyon route.

I can't recommend anywhere to stay there though.

There are two options either via the mountains (the shortest) which takes about 3 hours or via the coastal road which takes around 4 hours, obviously depending on your average speed. Both routes are fine and make for a pleasant, scenic drive, although the mountain route can get snowbound in winter.

Thanks for information. Yes Crabbit I know the Antalya roads, you are right the scenery is lovely, road is good too. We went over the mountain road during the winter and it looked like a Christmas card scene. Had snowball fights with some friends.

Anyway back to Ankara...

Yes the drive is straight forward and all major roads so you should have no problems. However Ankara itself is a nightmare to drive in if you dont know your way around. I've Turkish friends that refuse to drive in Ankara.
Have you considered the overnight bus option?
It is very cheap and the coaches are modern and confortable with stewards serving tea/coffee etc throught the trip. They leave Fethiye every evening around 9:30 - 10:00 and arrive in Ankara around 7:00 the next morning with a couple of 20 minute stops on the way.
Also the Taxi's in Ankara are cheap and plentiful so getting about should be no problem

Thanks for replies. I am having second thoughts about driving there now. I know what Istanbul is like and would not drive around there. A bus trip sounds better. I have often taken the bus from Antalya to Fethiye when returning to that airport and really enjoy the trip.
