interesting, but then the last line of the article caused me a little concern

It would appear from the Zaman article that the 90 / 180 day Visa can therefore be extended to a 270 / 180 Visa!

Nothing has been published in the official gazette so dont count your chickens yet.

This has come out today from the US consulate. This again is nothing new as you could get 6 month (even as little as 15 days) residence beforehand anyway.

Recently the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs notified the U.S. Embassy of the following regulation:
U.S. citizens who enter Turkey with a tourist visa obtained at a Turkish Consulate or who buy a tourist visa stamp at an airport or other port of entry or who are exempt from getting tourist visas, are now able to get a residence permit for tourism purposes for a maximum period of six months by applying at the Foreigner's Police Office.

According to these regulations U.S. citizens who wish to stay in Turkey for tourism purposes longer than 90 days, and who apply at the appropriate Foreigner's Police Office, will be allowed to stay legally in Turkey for up to a total of 9 months.

So how would this work, what would people have to do to 'extend' their visa? Nothing is made clear or simple - AS USUAL. :D

As mentioned. It might be being dicussed but nothing official has come out in the official gazette and zaman is not the official gazette. Everything is the same as it was yesterday.

How about a new system where you get a visa on arrival that lasts 90 days.

This could be a very good alternative to residency for people who winter out of Turkey. However, at the moment, things are as clear as mud as you say! There are too many questions to be answered.
