So after dropping my phone down the loo on Friday night* : :) I had to accept it had gone to Silicon Heaven and get a new one.
Obviously a contract was out of the question as we're shipping out in six months so I gritted my teeth and handed over my hard-earned pennies (and the rest) directly to the Apple store.
The bonus is that as my new phone isn't locked to any network I can insert any SIM I like and change if I want to....and I understand that includes overseas. In which case....am I right in thinking I won't need to register the phone? Presumably I can just get a SIM and do PAYG on Turkcell or whoever?
*Excessive alcohol consumption may or may not have been involved.

Unfortunately, you will still need to register it.
-
Your IMEI will be blocked.
-
120tl at the tax office and 20tl at the phone shop.. Do it within 28 days of getting there.

We have been trying to register 2 new phones since August without any success despite following all the instructions. The story has changed every time we've gone to the shops...from computers down to the latest - which is that foreigners are not allowed to register phones bought outside Turkey any longer. Apparently only a Turkish person who has been out of the country in the previous 4 weeks can register, they must show their passport with the valid entry visa. Totally and utterly bored and fed up with it all!!
-
A Turkish person wouldn't have a 'valid entry visa' on their passport would they ?
-
If you haven't already, try the big Turkcell shop near the PTT - its back door is opposite Bim. I find them quite good in there and a couple of them speak English.
Good luck!!
-
We tried it and failed. Ended up buying a cheap Turkish phone.
-
What they are saying Alan is that even a Turkish person has to have been out of Turkey before they can register and they must have a stamp on their passports as proof. Phil has been to the Maliye office and several Turkcell shops with 2 Turkish friends over the last few months...blood and stone springs to mind!!!

My granddaughter dropped her phone in the swimming pool, came in and covered it with rice all night,
And it was fine next day, just a little tip to try, must take all the condensation out of it.

No, but like a foreigner, they would have a valid entry stamp - although I think you knew that...

B&*%$r. :(
But thanks for the replies.
I've seen conflicting stories on other forums/FB groups etc about whether we can register phones or not, with some told they can't and others having no problem.
I also looked on the UK Government website which says you have to register within 28 days and also need to show proof of residence....which I can only imagine would be granted within that timescale in some kind of parallel universe. : :)

Davybill - tried the rice thing straight away but no joy. It's definitely bust. :(
-
I heard that a drowned mobile should be ok if you don't switch it off, just allow it to dry on its own without fiddling with any buttons. Not tried it though! ;)
-
Or you could try covering it with Silica Gel crystals for a few days.
-
Open battery compartment, take out battery, first step- dry battery, pay particular attention to terminals, second step- dry inside of battery compartment, again pay particular attention to terminals, third step- take out sim card gently pat dry, then wrap telephone loosely in kitchen towel/toilet paper leave someplace warm and dry for at least several days/a week if possible, reassemble and try your luck (keep your fingers crossed)

It's very definitely dead and replacement has already been bought.... I'm claiming it through contents insurance so at least I'll get the cost reimbursed.
Was hoping that I'd avoid the registration costs as the new phone is unlocked and can be used on any network, but it seems not. :(
-
You will be able to use it on any network here in Turkey but only after you register the phone here.
