Hearing aid and medical centre Fethiye
« on: December 03, 2007, 11:06:14 AM »
We bought digital hearing aids from England and lucky us one has packed in after 1 week of returning. We went to the Acil Medikal centre in Fethiye. Luckily they are under guarantee and the owner of the shop who was very very helpful is sending them away for repair. The servis at this shop is excellent and he speaks perfect English. They can also arrange hearing tests and supply the hearing aids. Pity we did't know this before!!!!! Anne

Well I almost made that post myself - and I wear two of the little bugg*rs.

I'm ready to buy two more digis in the next 12 months as mine will be 5 yrs old then and uninsurable for breakdowns etc - so maybe Turkey is an option. The pair of ITC's I am using now cost £4,800 so any large reduction on that would be well recieved.

Stoop we got ours at Specsavers in England. 2 for the price of one. £1.000 They are insured for repair allover the world. Turkey being one of the places. Sorry I was a bit touchy before. Barrie had to have an operation on his ear this year because he totally lost all of his hearing on his right side. He was already deaf on his left due to a stroke. He has
been completly miserable all Summer until he got the 2 hearing aids. You will know how hard it is for the person concerned also those around them. I tend to be a bit over protective sometimes.Anne x

Anne,

I understand - believe me! I was apparently hard of hearing for years before I would admit it. The CIC's (not ITC's as I posted above) are brilliant because they are completely in the canal (CIC) and hardly anyone knows I am wearing them. Only problem is they are prone to getting 'waxed up' and need regular servicing which costs me £16 per month and is unavailable after they are 5 years old)

I might be vain but I think there is still a stigma with deaf people wearing aids - almost like you are a bit stupid (no comments please - I know I don't need aids to look stupid  :). I think this is why many men will not wear the NHS ones - although I am getting fitted for a pair soon as they are free and will serve as emmergency replacements for mine when they go in for the servicing.

I do find the best way is to laugh with the jokers though and even at times crack the jokes before they even think of them!

Good luck to Barrie - I'm really happy the aids have cheered him up - hearing people really do not know how much us deafies miss when we are out socialising. Since I got mine I can join in conversations again and enjoy my social life instead of sitting quietly trying to lip read everyone and then asking a question that's already been answered (stupid? no just deaf!).

MOT -lol

I'm sorry I laughed at rosie10's post Anne, it just struck me funny at the time. I do understand some of the problems though as my Daughter has had terrible hearing trouble since childhood, she's now 25, she has worn hearing aids in both ears for a long time now, to make matters worse, she contracted maningeicocal septicemia when she was 13 and almost died, sadly this left her hearing even worse, she has since had a mastoidectomy on both sides, this had complications of it's own at the time, her hearing has improved slightly, but she still needs her hearing aids, although she doesn't wear them all the time, but should! I think it's because she can't wear the tiny digital ones, as she has constant infection in her ears it quickly blocks them so has to wear the behind the ear ones, which she's very conscious of, she has been through a lot but has coped extremely well. Sorry again for laughing, but believe me, I do know it isn't a funny subject.

Just an off day on my part. Again sorry. Your sentiments echo ours exactly Stoop. Socialsing is very hard. He just hoped he was laughing in the right places. Anyway sorted now. Specsavers have a very good reputation by the way. Buy one get one free!!Starting at £495. They are the same ones used by all of the "private specialists" who are charging above £2 grand. Their hearing test was as good as he got at the hospital. Carlan. Barrie has digital aids but they aren't tiny ones. They fit in the ear but fill the ear cavity without looking unobtrusive. Anne ( and no need to apologise)
