Presents from Turkey
« on: January 16, 2011, 12:31:05 PM »
Supposing you avoid the tourist tat, what presents do you take back from Turkey for family and friends? I think our most successful were spices from the market and little pots in which to serve them. We have red pepper in one and crushed red/pink peppercorns in the other and they sit permanently on the dining table.

Quite so; we are trend-setters in our house. But what I was really looking for was good ideas for presents.

Most things sold as typically Turkish I find a little too 'decorative' or busy for my tastes but glass can be very good. Even a nice evil eye makes a good present as it also comes with a story to tell. If you keep a look out for Denizli glass it is superb - often practical and sometimes very cleverly designed.

I think the pottery pan stands can be a good gift, or the smaller coasters.  There seem to be two qualities (ones with cheap foam on the back the others with firm grey/white rubber).  They are decorative and practical.
