Out of interest. Could anyone Turkish or non Turkish who has lived in Istanbul at some point, tell me where the closest decent beach to Istanbul is or where the people of Istanbul go in summer to cool down, sun bathe and relax at weekends.

When I worked there we used to go to Kilyos which is at the Black Sea end of the Bosphorus. Also used to drive down to Sedhul Bahir which is passed Gelibolu(Galipoli) and right on the tip at the entrance to the Dardanelles.Unfortunately this used to take about 4 hours. Kilyos is about an hours drive from the city centre.

There are several beaches. There are a few on the northern part of the Bosporus near Sariyer and the village (Anadolu kavagi) on the opposite side. There is also a beach in beykoz. For the black sea coast you have Kilyos and gumusdere of which solar beach is very popular. On the asian side you have riva whch is more quieter.
There is also a beach down in Bostanci on the asian side of the marmara sea but crowded and polluted and not a real beach. The islands how ever do have a few beaches but get packed at the weekends. There are some towards Silviri on the european side but is quite a drive away but there is a golf course there too.
Kilyos from taksim can be done in just over 30 mins but in the summer on weekends it can take upto 2 hours as half of istanbul goes there at the sametime and they only have the small forest road to get there.

Sile is great but Buyuk Cekmece is a very polluted region. You have the big port Ambarli close by and the Marmara sea isnt the best place to swim at the best of times becuase the currents push Istanbuls sewage into the Marmara sea and not the Black sea.

You only have to see the number of ships parked near the airport and then guess how much pollution they throw out then you have the 'dere's which are the outflow rivers which are dry most of the time but stink when you drive over them. Not as bad as before but they still all wash out into the Marmara and its is unbelievable the amount of rubbish washed out from them. The most famous one is near the Fenerbahce stadium and it is nicknamed the boklu dere.
