Just got back from Calis and saw this thread. I was reading the book 'Peter Swan' while in Calis, it was loaned to me by his son Carl. Anyone remember the case in 1965? where Peter Swan, David Bronco Lane and Tony Kay, all Sheffield Wednesday players, were banned 'sine die' for betting that Ipswich would beat them. Swan was an England international, 19 caps, and would almost certainly have played in the 1966 world cup, but he destroyed his carier with one moment of foolishness. He eventually got the sentence recinded after 8 years but by then was in his 30s. Carl played proffesional football for Doncaster and Rochdale and now lives close to me in Cumbria. How times and sentences have changed, money talks even louder now.
It's a good read for people who can remember the case.
