Anti-mosquito team
« on: March 05, 2013, 15:36:47 PM »
Today a two men anti mosquito team appeared in Ovacık. They said , they are spraying insecticides into the pools. I did not let them in. They entered all the gardens around without warning or asking for permission and sprayed all around. I did not let them in as they have no right to enter private property like this. No respect for animals like cats , dogs , birds drinking water from the pools. No attention if there is a pet in the garden that should not escape.

I come from a part of Istanbul where they started to fight mosquitoes this way starting 1960. When we left in 2007 and came here , there were still mosquitoes. What was missing was the birds. The mosquitoes survived , other insects died and the birds left.

They have been doing this for years around here. It does make a difference to the number of mosquitoes in my opinion. There are considerably fewer here than there used to be.They usually spray stagnant water areas, pool pump rooms, drains as well as hedgerows and shrubbery etc.

I am sure you are right about danger to other animals and insects too. We all have to breathe it in or hold our breath indefinitely when they take to the road and roam the area spraying as they go.

Can't pass comment on the Ovacık squad, but the ones that do our area only spray areas that are obviously breeding grounds, like pools full of green stagnant water, where pools are empty or the water kept fresh they do not spray.
Agree about the pet escapes,  they are lazy sods - never close gates behind them.

Not as daft as it sounds Tinx.

I think in parts of the world they release male mozzies that have been bread to fire blanks.

Ouch!

Yes, and if you stop the male being able to breed they won't produce females  :)
