*** New Virus Alert ***
« on: February 27, 2014, 10:32:17 AM »
If you receive an email which purports to be from Vodaphone/T-Mobile/Orange and says it contains an MMS or PDF, do not open the attachment.

The sender will be something along the lines of: mms.service9341@mms.Vodafone.co.uk

The attachment contains malware which has the specific purpose of stealing usernames and passwords stored on your machine.

Another one doing the rounds is from the tax office. It says your tax return from last year is under investigation, and asks you to open the attachment and read it. Don't go there   ;)

Seen a significant increase in the number of emails containing virus/malware attachments recently that are getting past the main email providers spam filtering.

The most common ones seems to be Barclays Bank, followed by Santander and UPS.  Other culprits are lesser known such as (looks like) gift shops and eCard services.

The subject line is generally something along the lines of "Your account might be permanently suspended" or "We tried to deliver your parcel today" or "Order acknowledgement for order number 1002889" and all have attachments you are asked to open or print.

Do not attempt to open the attachments, even out of curiousity - they all contain malicious code that will compromise the security of your PC or laptop.

The best rule is never to open an unsolicited email attachment.  If you receive one from someone you know, have a look at the actual message - does it look right?  Is the message something that person would send?  Increasingly, infected machines are being used to send out further malware, using the owners contact list, and appearing to come from that person.

I received an email yesterday from a friend, a cardiologist, saying he had been badly injured while on holiday
in Turkey and needed money urgently. I sent him a text and he was at work at a Midlands hospital. He checked
and his email account had been hacked. Growing problem it seems.
