Carry iD - please read
« on: April 25, 2016, 10:47:41 AM »
Hi.
Just to let everyone know, police in Calis and fethiye areas are carrying out random checks whilst out on foot, in cars or even in the Dolmuş.
Local advice is to carry iD.
i can only assume this is a responce to recent concerns in tourist areas.

Having to carry ID at all times has been law in Turkey for years - it's just not been enforced that vigorously in tourist areas.

Good to see them being pro-active.

Does this mean we need to carry passports with us when we are out and about?

Yes. Technically you should always carry your passport when abroad...

Technically yes, if you don't have an RP.  A photocopy used to be ok but given the current situation they may not be so keen now.

A lot is down to the guy who asks - my OH got taken back to the house by two Polis once so she could show her passport and Ikamet as she'd forgotten them that day.  That was Istanbul though, and the Polis there are a different breed...

Ok, thanks both.

Always leave passports in hotel/apartment safe when we're away but will have to remember to carry them with us now. Don't really have a problem with it if it's for extra security.

don't have a problem with security side of it, but don't fancy carry it around and about the market or a day out on the beach, not something i would want to leave unattended while i popped off for a swim!

Wonder if they'd accept a photo of it on your phone.

Get a copy notarized and carry that. Problem solved.

It's the same with vehicle documents. Whether it's your own vehicle or a hired one, you must have the registration documents available for inspection if stopped by the Polis or Jandarma.
