Big hearted performance. Only beaten by the worst refereeing decision in international football history then.

I have never understood why the England team never seem to put in that type of big hearted performance.

Can it really be that they are all over paid prima donnas who don't understand what it means to play for one's country. Surely not :(

Not all prima donnas but certainly some of them.

However, when a club pays 50 to 100 million pounds for a player who earns millions each year can they really risk injury playing in a national side?

Just because they are "qualified" (in terms of both birthright and ability) to play for a national team does not mean they have any national pride.

Certainly, the club managers (in the premier league there are few if any Englishmen involved) have no interest in seeing their prize players risking injury.

When chosen to play for "their" country it is a sign that they are good enough to play at that level - no national pride required.

Anyone producing a half - hearted performance on a rugby pitch would soon be feeling genuine injury rather than rolling half the length of the pitch with the equivalent of a paper cut.

Money, in short, has changed the game.

I used to enjoy going to matches played at the highest level (at afordable prices) - now, I wouldn't go to one if I could get in free.

The main reason cited for the failure of successive England teams is the huge pressure of expectation that the World Cup puts on them.

I have no idea why, I have expected f*** all from them for around 27 years now.

That's what I don't understand - your average fan would give his right arm to play for his country.

Your average fan doesn't have several million in the bank

The point I was trying to make, unsuccessfully apparently, was that even if the average fan HAD millions in the bank he would still give his right arm to play for his country

I think you made the point successfully, just you were wrong :D

I think money is enough to remove any requirement to do it for your country.
