Title: Christmas Decorations
Post by: Rimms on November 20, 2013, 14:15:43 PM
After watching Christmas adverts on UK TV for what seems like ages now, we wondered how long before we saw signs of the festive season appear in Fethiye.  The answer came today as we found ourselves buying lights, Santa hats and tree decorations in a shop there. It was the inflateable Santa outside the door that drew us inside.

Christmas, it gets everywhere....... Eventually

Decorations have been in our shops since September and I note a girl I know writing on Facebook that she did not get her tree up until 4th November as she usually has it up for Halloween..
I always hear people saying you have to buy your decorations early, because they sell out quickly. So people panic and start to buy as soon as the decorations hit the shops.

No need to buy early at all - nothing wrong with the ones we've had for the last 20 years!  ;D

Yes, Marina, keep hold of them. The secondary market for old Christmas Decorations is really good, lots of collectors for them, including a friend of mine who is in the Antiques business and has a huge collection.  I also have a few old decorations myself that I put out every year.

Well it was slightly tongue in cheek Jacqui, but we do have some favourites we've had for quite a long time and even some from when our girls were little.  Wouldn't dream of throwing them out just to buy shiny new ones!   :)

O.K. Marina, take a look at this page from an Auction coming up shortly, start at Lot 172.  Father Christmas, sleigh and reindeers estimate  £3,000-£4,000.   Go down the list, you will be amazed. I always tell people not to throw away old Christmas Decorations.  I saw a set of 1950's Pifco Christmas Tree lights still in box, at Auction make £70.00.  The wiring and plug could never be used now.

Amazing and really interesting, I'm sure we must have thrown thousands of pounds worth out over the years.

I'm quite shocked at that Jacqui, like Rimms says we must have thrown thousands of pounds worth of stuff away, and I'm sure I can remember having  set of Pifco lights at some point.   :o

Kipa have them, as do the Ambulaj, which is the stationers that are at the top end of the fish market in the road that cuts through to the one way system

I am still green at this forum so forgive my ignorance.. Jacqui, when you say 'in our shops' you mean to say you are a shop owner here in Fethiye/Calis and you had xMas decs since Sep, or (I noticed your 'location' states GB) you mean our shops here in  England carry them since Sep?

My second Q is, when members post about a location, why not be specific or descriptive as to the location so other members benefit from it? Or is it against forum rules to promote a specific location? thx.

Don't be silly. How ridiculous a rule would that be :(

No, I mean the shops in Scotland.  I see you have looked under my Avatar so know I am based in the U.K.  I am sure you will get the hang of the Forum and get  to know us all very soon.
