New law for imprtation of house hold goods
« on: November 12, 2009, 11:35:17 AM »
As of November 12th 2009 the importation rules for house hold goods will change.
There will no longer be a temporary import rule (gecici kabul) and have to leave a security deposit etc. Also work permit is no longer needed which was the case for istanbul.
The only tax you will now pay is the TRT bandrola tax for TVs, radios and other equipment capable of receiving tv and radio waves.

Documents needed for import are now as follows:
Residence permit
Passport
lease or tapu (rental lease must be for at least 24 months).

This is a vast improvement from the old system but the system has not changed for importing motor vehicles.

Have they increased or decreased the appalling cost of the required backhanders?

The only fees that should be paid now are SIT (storage in transit), bandrola tax and and THC (terminal handling charge). The old backhander system was something like an importation tax which was made up on the day after the customs thief inspected the goods. That has now stopped.
Obviously a lot of custom blokes will have a huge drop in their income.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has recently brought their possessions over, the idea that the backhander system has entirely disappeared seems incredibly far fetched to me.

Yes, in the last year to bring goods under the temporary import rule, a work permit was needed. Didnt need one before but the 3 ports up here started demanding them but now that has stopped as of today.

There were 2 ways of importing...temporary import where you have to pay a large deposit and you have to renew it every year or the taxed import which was the one that attracted the huge back handers as you were only allowed to bring in 1500 euro of goods. anything over was done "under the table".
This has also stopped as of today.

What's the score with those people who originally imported temporarily? Will they still have to continue paying an annual renewal fee?
