When I kept hens my very knowledgeable Farmer neighbour told me if a hen was sitting on eggs, to give the eggs a spray with tepid water every couple of days, sometimes the shells get very hard and the chicks don't have the strength to peck their way out.
I found I hatched more eggs using this method.  Later I got an incubator and always used to spray the hen, duck and geese eggs .
