So is the bleach to keep the water "fresh" or to enable the flowers to last longer?

It stops bacteria forming and also stops the water stagnating and so smelling.  A Florist told me this years ago. She said she always added a little bleach to all the tubs of flowers she sells.   I have found it particularly good in Turkey where the weather is so hot.  The Flower man always tells me to "change the water every two days" However with a little bleach this is not necessary.
