In August this year the mayor of Bodrum left the DP and, instead of joining AKP, joined the main opposition CHP. In September the government issued demolition warrants on new hotels within 100 metres of the sea.

Bodrum Demolitions - :(

I can see it now, the president sat in his office, elections looming, people rioting on the streets of Istanbul, billions wiped off the stock market, the value of the lira at an all time low fuelling massive inflation and his first thought's are ..... " I better check if there are any restaurants built near the seaside in Fethiye"

Do me a favour

Bizarre as it may sound, that scenario is exactly what happened on the Bodrum peninsular.

Interestingly enough the property(s) owned by the Rixos Group emerged unscathed from the sh1t flying about in the Bodrum area.  The fact that the CEO of Rixos and RTE are buddies and that his son in law is also connected to the Rixos had no bearing on the decisions...  aye right!

Following his visit to Bodrum in August Erdogan said:
“This much unjustness is not acceptable. Development has almost expanded into the sea. There is not even a coastline. Housing will be in the sea in the next step if this continues ... The situation is catastrophic. We witnessed the sensitivity of those repeating the word environment all around ... It is not understandable how the local municipalities stood idle while these buildings were constructed. They may face legal prosecutions, and they may lose their posts. We are immediately starting inspections and punishments”.http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/Default.aspx?pageID=517&nID=52704&NewsCatID=338

Well Fethiye (as Colwyn will know) is one step further than Bodrum in this respect. Where Shaka etc are now was the sea, there was nothing but water to the right of the coast road into Fethiye.

RTE may be quite unhappy.

That stretch was filled up to prevent residential properties being torn down. I can't recall the exact number but there is a law saying that along the seafront there should be a stretch of 50? metres wide from the buildings.
