If I understand you correctly Chris, you ate talking about the residence permit, -the blue book.  You would need it for getting in and out of the country and need to produce it for if the Jandarma stop you.  We have had to show it quite a few times in the year + we have been here.  Unless I have got the wrong end of the stick with what you mean..

There is a serious point here; the cost of yearly residency as opposed to renewing a 3 month visitor visa. When i came to Turkey 5 years ago I was told I needed residency before I could buy property and have a telephone installed. I have never been asked to produce it for any other reason and after the first year don't see that it has any value (other than having to be renewed less often than the 3 month visa). As long as you are careful about renewing your visitors visa regularly it is a much cheaper option than buying residency.

Incidentally, I have been told that recent increases in the cost of residency have been imposed as a result of increases by the UK government to charges made to Turkish citizens living in UK. If this is the case, perhaps we should be lobbying the UK government to stop making our lives here in Turkey more difficult and expensive!

Brian.

if you renew yearly it will be more expensive, get a longer term residency, 3 or 5 years

Taken from Fethiye Times this week, break of down costs of trip to Meis, bus fare 12Ytl each way, boat fare 40Ytl, visa 15euro (approx 28Ytl) Total 92Ytl x 4 = 368Ytl/year.
Cost of residency approx 500Ytl/year.

A saving of 132Ytl/year or 33Ytl per trip. Then add 4 days of your life.

Thats not including anything else you spend that you would not spend had you not done the trip, ie duty free.(unless it's Jack Daniels you don't save that much)

Plus you have no choice, you have to leave the country come wind, rain, high winds or rough seas.

It's residency for me, cheaper in the long run.

Yes, that's what we thought.  And you can relax and not have to think about all those trips.

What I don't understand is, why is it 1 litre of duty free allowed on returning from Meis but more at Dalaman/Marmaris? It's the same country - you don't get different allowances at Gatwick compared with Birmingham.

We enjoy the trip as we can have pork chop and chips (mmmmmmmmm) on the Island for lunch, buy duty free stuff (it is cheaper!), buy pork chops and ham to bring home (don't tell customs though) and have a good day out.  So far not had bad weather (touch wood).

Kieth,  In answer to your previous question I have quoted part of the Fethiye Times explanation, hope it helps;

"Kas port does not have a Turkish Duty Free shop so the normally generous allowances are severly restricted to those listed below:

 - 1 Ltr of Spirits (Gin, Vodka, whisky) (or 2 * 70cl bottles if they are packaged like that)

 - 200 cigarettes,
 - 10 Cigars,
 - 200gr pipe tobacco,
 - 20ml perfume/aftershave etc,
 - 1kg Coffee,
 - 1kg chocolate

In addition customs rules forbid the importation of certain food stuffs including bacon and pork products."

Plus;

"It really is worth buying your allowance [See below] as the prices are significantly lower than Turkey. We have listed a few examples below [as at September 2008]:

# JB Rare 1L - Duty Free 13.00 Euro (24 YTL) Price in Turkey 64 YTL
# Jack Daniels 1L - Duty Free 20.30 Euro (37 YTL) Price in Turkey 86 YTL
# Bacardi 1L - Duty Free 14.30 Euro (26 YTL) Price in Turkey 64 YTL
# Gordons Dry Gin Export Strength 1L - Duty Free 10.25 Euro (19 YTL) Price in Turkey 48 YTL but a lower alcohol %.
# Marlboro Red or Gold Box of 200 - Duty Free 15.70 Euro (29 YTL) Price in Turkey 48 YTL"

Fethiye does not have a duty free Shop but it seems it does not have a restricted allowance either when returning from Rhodes!  So why.......Am I cynical enough to think it could be a source of revenue to the officials in Kas:(

Can't answer that one, only going by what was in the Fethiye Times. 8)  Perhaps an e-mail to them might get an answer:(or maybe not :)

There certainly doesn't seem to be any restrictions on spirit allowances for Kas boat captains, from what I saw. And yes, I do wonder, what ever happens to the bottles confiscated on your return to Kas?
