Title: First visit to Oben's
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on May 20, 2015, 21:56:30 PM
After 10 years we decided to give Oben's a try.  So, two G.&.T's two beers, free starter of bread and garlic butter with small meze.  Two main courses and two free coffees 79TL.   So around £20.00. and I would say the best Piri Piri Chicken I ever had.
Good service, good food. Lked the way the kitchen was behind glass so we could see it, it was lovely and clean.   Hated the earwigs that seem to drop from the overhead greenery.  I have a thing about earwigs.
Note the little gay guy who was at the Letoon 10 years ago works there now and remembered us. He is a really nice guy and it was lovely to see him again.
So, would recommend Oben very highly and will go again, but will sit under the wooden ceiling next time.   ;)

That little "gay" guy as you describe him is Efe :(

So why the unhappy face John, because I did not remember his name from 10 year ago?    I doubt he knows my name either, but I don't think that matters a fig.  :)

Jacqui - not that you did not remember his name.

I just thought that it was unfortunate that you chose to describe Efe as that "little gay guy". You might have said the really nice little fella that worked at Letoon.

Perhaps it's just me  :)

John, calling some gay in this day and age is not a derogatory term, why should it be?
Of course, years ago it is a word that would not have been used in a description, but we have moved on now.  We are enlightened and a lot of gay people are very glad of this.
So basically, gay, is not a dirty word.

I haven't been to Obens or Letoon and never met Efe.  Can I ask how tall is he and how does anyone know that he is gay?  Does he share details of his personal life with customers or are there other factors?

Yes, that's my point - if someone is 4 foot 6 and performing in a way commonly described as "camping it up", they are hardly likely to be offended by your description.

I understand H's reaction too.  I cringed when I read the description - not because I was offended but because I knew I was supposed to be and was waiting for the backlash.  You can't describe people by using the most obvious features that sets them apart from the majority of those around so next time someone describes me as "that big lass with the bright green nails", I'll remember to be offended.  ;)

Back to topic. We were there last night as well.My wife had the grilled salmon and said it was superb. When we got there it was very busy and we thought it would take an age to get our meal as every thing is cooked from fresh.Oben came over and asked if we could wait 10 mins before he took our order to prevent back up in the kitchen. Well whats 10 mins when you are on holiday, sure enough true to his word he came and took our order and we had a lovely meal.Glad other people are trying this place.

So, walking down the prom to the Koca Calis end, pass the Letoon Hotel and walk on It is the first restaurant on the left hand side.  I would say it was the cheapest meal yet and one of the best.
We also noted how full it was.  Like other restaurants in the area who have been long established and get good reputations.   This week we have noted Meeting Point, Bella Mamas, Georges and now Oben all full when other places are virtually empty.

We thought our meal was really cheap for what we got.  I personally could not finish all of mine. The free cappuccino was also lovely.   We were nearly going to call in and see you Jane, but thought it may be a bit late.

We had   Free bread
              Grilled salmon
              Meatball casserole
              Two bottles of decent wine

At todays rate  £34   Taking into account the price of wine not bad at all.

Based on the comments, we think we will give this a try next month as well.  Jacqui, the chicken piri piri sounds nice - how hot (spicy) is it please ?

Just right for me, not to hot.  I have to admit I sometimes push the veggies to one side, but the peppers, onions etc., were all so lovely I ate nearly all of it, but it was still too much for me.  Ask them to make it as you like, hot or not so hot.

I will second the Piri piri at Obens I love it!
Hubby has think it's called Petes casserole which is spagetti but with sea food, he normally says it's one of his favourite meals whilst we are on our holidays!
