Post by: kevin b on December 22, 2009, 18:06:53 PM
We got a dongle today so will now be back on forum more rather than rely on bars internet.
The dongle is from Turkcell & dongle cost 140tl special offer,10tl for sim card,49tl for 4gb valid for 1 month & 5tl for registration if anyone is interested in one.
Vodaphone have none on stock but they were 99tl for dongle,15tl for sim,5tl for registration with 3 months access free with 1 mb limit then 35tl per month. Both dongles on payg.
Both shops oppsite new mosque on oneway system.

Thanks - very interested in this as my husband continues to run his business whilst we are on holiday in Turkey generally for about 4-5 weeks in Spring and Autumn.  Any views on performance and are the costs likely to fall as mobile broadband gains momentum in Turkey? He's only interested in PAYG as we don't spend enough time in Turkey to take out a contract (sadly!).

Very pleased with performance upto now.costs have already dropped from when they 1st came available so may go lower.the one I got was on special offer so do not know full price if there ever was one.contract ones are apparantly available to Turks or people with Res permit.

Sooooo... if I used a mobile broadband dongle for 1 hour a day to surf the net , send and receive emails, look in at my fav site's, ( CBF) of course, how long would a 4gig- 49YTL PAYG last me?? I understand if I download music, movies and other large files the answer would be not long.

based on my use so far for surfing the net & checking emails for a total of about 1 1/2- 2 hours daily I think 1 meg will be enough but turkcell deal is for 4 meg only but maybe they will offer a 1meg deal later.
downloading films, music & streaming tv will quickly eat up your megs.

is this the same thing that is advertised by vodaphone? 3G,We had that thing in the uk,Just plug in usb port and away you go.
Your given a meter that you can check so you dont go over your monthly limit.
WELL IF IT IS DONT TOUCH IT WITH A TEN FOOT BARGE POLE.
The meter dosent register everthing and we received a £200 bill after a months use,The meter registered under the allowance for the month, after lengthy explosive telephone calls we went to the trading standards and they said vodaphone were in breach of the wireless and telephone act.
We were going to court but we moved here before we could persue legal action.

this is turkcell in turkey not vodaphone in uk & it is payg so when you use your megs you do not get access so no bills.

Be very careful of this Turkcell dongle. We purchased one of the 1st ones available when in Turkey in July, and it worked great for the 1st month. Thats when the troubles began. If you use your 4gb allowance within your month, and attempt to top up your dongle, all that will happen, is that you are purchasing extra usage for the the time left, before the ongoing monthly usage package expires, and you have to renew. In other words, this dongle you have purchased, lasts one month at a time. You then pay 49tl to again renew the contract/keep your contract number with Turkcell. If as said before you use up your 4gb usage allowance within the month, you pay additional funds via a mobile phone to (you think) top up this account. Turkcell will only allow you to renew each month, top ups are permitted, but at an extortianate rate. For example 100tl will not even last a day!! and that is with normal internet usage of 1hr per day. You have been warned.

If you go along the main road in Fethiye past the Tuesday market site heading towards town, head for the new mosque it's on the left of road.opposite the mosque there are some shops you want the 3rd turkcell shop(large one) it is the only turkcell that does the dongle.

I have read through all the info and now have a better understanding of dongles. So if I bring a laptop with me to Turkey can I just go into Turkcell and ask for a dongle, would I expect to pay around 50tlform it plug it into a usb port and then I am connected to the internet? Thanks for any answers I do not want to waste nearly all my hand luggage allowance bringing a laptop with me if I can not use it once in Turkey!

You pay 140tl for dongle then buy sim card then pay for internet access which has just gone down to 29tl for 4gb valid for 1 month.

If you fly Pegasus, you have an 8Kg allowance for hand luggage PLUS a laptop (I guess you'll be carrying in a laptop bag which has extra storage and no weight restriction within reason) so if you think it will be useful - bring it with you. I used my laptop bag as my hand luggage last year coming out as well as an additional rucksack. If your laptop has wi-fi there are plenty of places you can use them in the Calis area now. Store and view your photos, listen to music and communicate via skype with friends and family back home - brilliant!

Athnvr technical question from me re dongles, is it possible to buy a dongle in the UK and bring it to Turkey to use, will it work if purchased in the UK? Coming out Monday night so any answers gratefully received before then!

A uk one should work with uk sim card but will be expensive so why not just use free wifi from most bars.

ebay sell unlocked dongles a lot cheaper than people are talking about paying in Turkey. Has anyone tried buying an unlocked one and using with a Turkish sim?
Title: Dongle in Fethiye
Post by: kayakebab on December 31, 2010, 12:22:56 PM
Ive had a response from a very helpful ebay seller re dongles:

'yes it will work in Turkey as long as the network you are going to use is working on 2100MHz (what is most likely as it's standard for Europe) Turkcell certainly is.'

So, my next question, is can I go into a Turkcell or Vodafone shop and just get a mobile internet sim on payg without buying their dongle?

Kevin B said its 29tl for a 4gb a month, not sure who this is with, do they all charge about the same?
And do I just need my passport to buy it?

I will be coming to Ovacik for 3 months in May and would like to use laptop whilst there. Don't want to take out to bars/cafe to WIFI would like to use at 'home' to send/receive e-mails and various bits and pieces on internet. Would I be better with UK purchased dongle or Turkish option.

better i found to buy one here in Turkey,130 lira for dongle then 39 lira a month, allthough last year they dropped it to 29 lira a month, in the summer. i have found that it can be more reliabe than internet line connection out here as lots of people,s conection seems to go down a lot out here, turkcell shops are the ones to go to,they all stock them, just make sure you buy one that is compatible to your laptop i:e if you have windows 7 make sure the dongle is for windows 7 and not just up to vista, hope this helps.

If you can pick up a signal to a wireless internet connection when you come out, it may be worth asking neighbours - many people in Turkey "share" an internet connection - one person has it installed & the cost is shared by other neighbouring users - a password is needed for access. It's like using your laptop in a bar/cafe using WIFI, but from the comfort of your home - usually a cheaper option all round.

but then back to the point, cheaper all round but poor line connection, power cuts in turkey, use your laptop with dongle and your battery life :)

Just back from Fethiye and tried my unlocked Dongle with a Turkcell Sim card but it would not work:(.
Had to buy Turkcell Dongle with 4GB for 140tl.Once it was connected it worked very well.
From now on I can buy sim cards for 1 week duration at 12tl each.

A small update on my Dongle experience - I bought a Vodaphone one, have had no problems with it, but tried a friends Turkcell one in my laptop and it gave a far greater speed, also the monthly PAYG costs are identical but V/phone only give 1GB whereas T/Cell give 4GB download usage.

I was told in Azda (Hisaronu) last week that the cost of a Turkcell Dongle was 79TL + 19TL for the sim card + 39TL for 4GB 1 month allowance.
they had a special offer on where you get the sim free therefore pay 118TL for the first month.
Top ups were 12TL for 1GB 1 week, 39TL for 4GB 1 month and I think there was one for about 24TL for 1 GB 1 month.

Is there anyone who could give me a rough current price for a Dongle package and whether to go to Avea or Turkcell, the one I hired has to go back tomorrow and I feel it is time to buy one,I do not want to get ripped off as I am on my own I dont want to be an easy target, but if I go in the shop armed with some info this should be less likely to happen :)many thanks to anyone who can help me.
