I am having problems with my fireplace, the smoke is pouring into the room instead of up the chimney. My landlord's answer is get a soba, but I am not keen on them and quite like the idea of a lovely log fire. I would like to explore the possibility of getting the chimney swept and to see if it cures the problem before I get a soba in, anyone know of anyone?

What you need is a couple of chickens ! Take 'em up on the roof. Drop 'em down the chimney and after they've flapped all the way down you'll have a nice clean chimney AND you can hire 'em out to the neighbours. ;)

Thanks KKOB, I'll try that :-)

They also have a lovely smoky flavour when you barbecue them.
KKOB is not joking, I have seen this being done out in the villages. Very scary for the birds I am sure :(

Shades of déjà vu here! Didn't we have a similar thread running earlier this year?
Sue, you might be better off getting a builder in as the chimney might not have been built for use, only for show, I can put you in touch with an expat builder if you want. Keith

Thanks Keith, the problem is I am only renting and didn't want to get doing anything structurally. The fireplace has obviously been used by previous tenants, and I do know that there is a birds nest up there. I thought a good sweep would maybe solve the problem.

Never seen a sweep here Sue, sounds like you just need someone to go up on the roof & clear the nest.

There's the rope and sacking method too. Rope fed down the chimney, from the fireplace tie a couple of those plastic woven sacks that grain or similar comes in ( I'm 100% positive someone will have some in the village) then draw the rope back up the chimney.
No soot covered chickens running round your living room :)
