Title: Pictures on the front page of newspapers
Post by: Highlander on February 01, 2014, 20:32:12 PM
This is something that always bothers me.

Last Thursday evening a 19 year old lad was tragically killed near us when his Corsa went under the trailer of a lorry.

Today on the front page of the local newspaper there was a photograph of the car with five members of the emergency services surrounding it. I can only hope that the poor lad had already been removed before the photo was taken. Nonetheless it was a horrific photo.

It is not the first picture of a mangled car in which people have died that has been "splashed" over the front page. It must be horrendous for family and friends to see that.

Do you agree that it should not have been published.

Needless voyeurism, are we meant to be hoping to see bits of mangled bodies, I agree its completely out of order and could do with some regulating.  Talk about the freedom of the press!!

Mixed feelings on this, it's upsetting for the family, but, on the other hand, there are so many teenagers involved in fatal accidents, (I am not saying it was his fault on this occasion), this could be a wake up call for some of them, to take things easy, maybe, photographs like this could save further young lives.

No John, I don't agree. Newspapers and the www are very visual these days and a picture of a mangled car doesn't upset me but may help to illustrate to others the folly of speeding or drinking and driving.

However, I do get concerned at the apparent race to publish "the first picture" of the victim of a murder or road accident.

I wonder if publishing the picture might serve to prevent even one person doing the same - if it does then perhaps it is worth it. If you worry about this sort of thing in the UK John, you wouldn't believe how it is in Turkey. Absolutely shocking what is published and transmitted.

I seem to remember that a few years ago the government showed graphic pictures of crash victims on posters all over the place. I think it was designed to make people think about not drink driving or speeding.

I don't remember reading or hearing about objections to that, so why are these images it so objectionable now, leaving out the newspaper voyeurism aspect??

Another aspect which troubled me was "who took the photo and gave it to the paper".

The subject matter would suggest that it was taken fairly shortly after the crash.

Friends of ours in Calis had a neighbour (British) who's quite elderly father had come to stay for a holiday. Sadly he slipped on the marble floor during the night and hit his head on it, and died. They were advised not to move him until the police had attended. With the police standing over the father, a man was videoing him lying there on the floor. They assumed it was something to do with a postmortem or something.

Till it was shown on the Turkish TV news.

We have a long way to go to reach that level of voyeurism...

Many years ago a guy that lived four doors from us was shot dead in a local pub.
The press camped out in his front garden, they were round the back taking pictures
through the windows, they were grilling his young kids and conned them into letting
a couple of reporters in to use the toilet. They went through all the bedrooms, stole
a lot of photo's and the pictures were on the front of the papers next day.

Its all about selling newspapers.!           Disgusting.

Papers want to sell more copies, simple as, especially in the current climate where online is in the ascendancy. They will choose whatever picture will help achieve this.

I have been part of many news desk/picture desk conferences where this has been the case. I've also witnessed editors deliberately choosing the most unflattering image of, say, Camilla Parker-Bowles when there were some really lovely ones available, just because that would fit better with their readers' perception of her as being ugly, horse-faced and incomparable to 'Saint' Diana.

Absolutely right - and I'm sure I've told this story on here before but we lived opposite the second person in the UK to receive a heart transplant - and our road was crawling with press from the national newspapers. We knew his mother as she worked in the local Co-op, but I didn't even know the name of this chap, and even though he lived literally opposite, knew nothing about him at all.

A man is given an amazing opportunity to live a longer and better life thanks to advances in medical technology - and what is it the press, knocking on our door, want to know?

"We understand he had an affair a few years ago, do you know anything about that?".

Our neighbour in Turkey once showed us the front page with his daughters friend stuck under the wheel of a lorry. Harrowing picture.

Sickening what some will do for cash (I assume).
