is there anyone in Uzumlu, who would like to earn a few quid for taking a couple of very nice people to tespos to get a load of provisions, when we come there in september, we are a party of 10 so would need a lot of drink food etc, i have been informed that we would save loads of dosh by going here,?
-
Morning Jon , you can get most things in Uzumlu ,for the first few days i should relax and then see what you need ,Tespo is ok but it doesnt have all the things that you will need , the loads of dosh you save could be outwayed by the cost of transport as i say if i was you i would chill out for a couple of days buy localy and then decide what you will need ,there are a lot of helpful guys out here who will show you round . iwould have a drink in the wine house on the first night you will be suprised how much information you will obtain ,Regards Calvin
-
Couldn't agree with you more, chill out for the first couple of days & then see what you really need.
-
good idea, its just that ive been told different things about the village, IE the price, and the variation of things, thanks for the advice.
-
The price difference on most groceries etc is minimal. Indeed on certain items we have even found the odd saving.
-
great news, could you advise on the best places to go to fill our beer fridge, and our food fridge.
-
Why do you have to go down that road Eric ?Kylkimry is coming for a holiday he doesnt want to get mixed up in local politics!! and this is my opinion !!!!!,as i said before chill out for the few days and make your own desisions about where too or where not to buy Regards Calvin
-
I would say the butchers/grocers didn't do himself any favours when he sold us steak that was so tough it might have been horse. Trouble is we paid steak price for it. Won't be using him again.
-
I would agree with Rindaloo re: butchers/grocers, he is expensive for groceries (10 ytl for kitchen roll!)and meat is not good. And the other shops have a very limited selection (in my opinion). If there are 10 in the party, and I assume there are children, then surely it is easier to stock up at the beginning for water, milk, soft drinks, nibbles, necessities and beers etc? When you can buy an Efes in Tespo for 1.60ytl but get charged 2.40/2.50 in the village then the saving will be worth it. And who wants to have to nip to the shops every 2 minutes because you run out of something and then lug it back to the villa? Not my idea of a relaxing holiday!
John, let me know your arrival date and if I'm around I'll nip you down so long as you don't spend all day there!
-
I have deleted my reply as it obviously caused offence. At meetings, no comments regarding shops, have been made by myself as those who have attended will verify. In no way have I ever dictated to people what to do, all that has ever been asked is for support from everyone to maintain the village and valley as it stands now.

We have also bought steaks off him twice and they have been excellent both times. Every time I have went to him he has even given us a lift back to our house. I am all for using the local shops and by the time you drive/dolmus it to Fethiye you will have spent most of the savings anyway
-
Saaoirse, in theory I would agree with you regarding supporting the local shops but I would say that if you are feeding 10 people for 1/2 weeks then shopping locally is not a viable option. Fresh fruit/veggies only on a Friday, limited selection of provisions etc etc (Icim milk, yuk!) It is the same as in the UK, you buy locally for bits and pieces but go to the main supermarket for the main 'shop'.
These poor people are just coming out for a quick and hopefully relaxing holiday and they've been subjected to local politics, who/what/where is best etc. etc. Can't we just say 'welcome, have a good time in our lovely village'?
-
Saoirse, you say you have found a couple of things cheaper, what are they and which shop? Every penny saved etc. etc. Cheers
-
Hey, things hotting up and I'm not involved!! Imo follow Calvin's advice. Initially get essentials locally and then meet a friendly local who can run you down to Halkin's in Gunlukbashi - much nearer than Fethiye and imo just as good, esp for range of holiday stuff. Don't bother with Tespo's. Hope this helps.
-
Too true peecee ,exactly my point, let them enjoy Uzumlu
-
One example - 1 litre of milk - village 2.5ytl, BIMs store - 1ytl. A massive saving esp if 10 people involved and this is just one item. I rarely shop in village now; prices just not competitive and no real choice as each shop sells exactly the same things! Best buy imo is the fresh baked bread in the bakery at 65 courush - bargain! Shame we can't get Lurpak slightly salted butter!
-
i could bring you some lurpak if i9 could find a way to pack it correctly,
i did not think this topic would stir so many emotions, but its all good info, how would i get to Halkin's in Gunlukbashi ???
-
Mr Tippett Sir
It is very easy to make your own (local) butter salted - about a third of a teaspoon of salt should be dissolved in about 2 teaspoons of boiling water (don't add salt directly) then beat the solution into any butter. It won't immediately homogenise but with a bit of working in will do so very well. Then reform the butter into some or container or other.
The amount of salt can be adjusted to suit your taste.
See, I'm not just here to complain ;)
Next lesson: Scunner's amazing home made crumpets (no honestly!).
-
I was also going to mention that salt is a natural preservative in butter, so it is a good idea for more than one reason :)
-
Impressed Mr Scunner sir
-
An item we found cheaper was the tubs of ice cream which were then slightly cheaper than the likes of migros. Bottom line is you pays your mnoey you makes your choice. We dont have a car so at 12lira a round trip to Fethiye in an often packed and stifling dolmus I prefer to pay an extra few lira and for most things shop locally
-
hi you can get lurpak but i cant remember if it was migros or super market opp school in gunlukbasi.also if you can get to ciflic you can buy tuborg lager direct from the factory a lot cheaper it was 45 ytl for 24 lge cans slightly better than efes i think.

Am I going stark staring mad or has the entire staff of "Shoppers
Weekly" decided to holiday in Uzumlu this summer...?
-
LOL!
Boring little lot we are in Uzumlu!
-
:D Mis-read that, I thought the title was mad/woman with van, wondered if it was the one eyed one. ;)
-
im not bothered if its a mad woman or a mad man, im getting great info for my upcoming holiday, and thats the idea of the forum i think, im going to enjoy trying to put faces to all the names
-
forgot to ask on my last posting. how far is it to Halkin's in Gunlukbashi????
-
Laffa, she hasn't been spotted yet but there was a fishing rod seen hanging out a window!! think she must have upgraded to a scooter, hill's a bit steep for a bike!
Kylkimry, the dolmus drives straight past Halkins at the bottom of the 'hill'. Nip on, nip off job coming from Fethiye. i think we're all looking forward to your arrival, you've certainly set the motion in 'shopping'.
-
Kylkimry, don't know if you've been here before but Uzumlu Dolmus goes through Gunlukbashi. Otherwise friendly local will take you - less than 10 min drive down mountain.
Scunner, thanks for salt tip. Will try it but not sure if the result will taste right on my crumpet!
There does seem to be quite alot of interest in shopping! Perhaps food/drink is the highlight of our lives here! Perhaps we could organise a committee to ask the local shop owners for specific items - I can't see why we cannot get a Brit Daily paper in the village?
-
ps forgot to add you'll have to buy us all an Efes for the advice/info, bang go your savings ;)
-
i have had that much response, i could not possibly buy you all a drink, but if you pass our rented villa you would be welcome to a cold one that i bought from halkins.
-
do you need a membership card for tespos?? i have read elsewhere that it is like our cash & carry.
-
In theory - in practice they just ask for your address (I started with "Sokak..." and the guy said "no - address like Hisaronu? Calis?" - so that was that. Never been asked for a membership card.
-
The thing about buying your beer from Tespo is the deposit how are you going to get that back at the end of your holiday ,the Butcher in the village will sell you beer at near to wholesale price, and at least you dont have to trail into Fethiye to get a refund on deposit , ask in he village when you arrive i am sure that there are many of us with good info for you .Calvin
-
ill give you an empty crate or 2 if you like from my pub as long as i get them back.this will save you paying a deposit.you will then only pay 36ytl for one crate which i can assure you you will not get cheaper anywhere else.pop into fethiye irish pub and ill see your ok.
-
I think we bought cans from Tespo and didn't need to pay a deposit. Will check this out.
-
how much is the deposit on a crate??
-
You dont have to pay a deposit on a case of canned Efes. However, you will have to pay a lot more for the beer than if it was in bottles.
WW
-
thats strange, why pay more for cans then bottles? whats the differance?? usually its the other way round .
-
6ytl on empty crate
-
not sure what im expecting when i arrive in your village, the butcher selling beer, the lace woman selling wine, what do the normal stores sell??
-
LOL!
Thats Uzumlu for you! We all just live on meat and booze
-
sounds good to me, can't wait to get there.
what does the barber sell
-
the barber is great. For my haircut-Hisaronu 15ytl, Fethiye 7ytl, Uzumlu 3ytl!
-
thats very cheap, shame every thing else is expensive in the village then we would not have to go to supermarkets.
is it easy to exchage money in the village? if so do they have a good rate and do you get charged commission? do they like sterling like the big resorts?
-
I havent a clue where this idea of everything being expensive in the village has come from!
Virtually all prices are almost the same as in Fethiye. Maybe a few lira here and there but I can tell you for a meal, a beer etc its very comparable to Fethiye without the hassle fumes crowds and stuffy heat
-
people have been telling me to go to the supermarkets for our provisions because the stores in the village are quite expensive, bearing in mind we are going to be 10 adults, who enjoy a beer so we will need a few packs and quite a lot of food.
-
I understand what you are saying and with 10 adults it could add up. Personally I find that if we were to get the dolmus to Fethiye, then have to drag all the stuff back to Uzumlu, I would rather pay an extra few lira. Everbody to their own. Are you staying in a couple of houses?
-
Just get a local taxi, agree on a price before you get in and off you go. Apart from price, you'll get way more choice. Use Uzumlu to buy bread, and local wine (better than harpic for the bathroom).
-
we dont have taxis in Uzumlu
-
Have you got electricity yet?
-
very funny scunner, like your sense of humour.
we have rented to villas but we will be spending our days at each others pool. 1 is called fig tree villa and the other villa kadyanda.
-
If this debate goes on much longer I'll come and pick you up myself ;)
-
i forgot to mention, a very nice lady from your village as offered to take us to the supermarket
-
Phew
-
Just saw barber thread above - 3ytl charge. Ramazan charges me 10 with a shave! Am I being done?
What does the barber sell you ask? Something for the weekend sir!!!!
-
Yeah Chris 3ytl for headshave. Wee barber in the new premises near teahouse
-
the only thing that amazes me about your answer is how long it took for someone to crack that gag

L M A O!
-
what does that mean??
-
Laugh my a**e off
-
were getting off the subject in hand now, have i got this correct?
the cheapest beer is from the butchers, the best wine is from the lace maker. you can get a 3ytl shave for 10ytl, and get a taxi down the hill but Uzumlu has no taxis.
-
Correct so far, don't forget you can get "something for the weekend" at the garden centre.
Sadly, on reflection that is actually true nowadays.
-
right to be serious now, can i change money in the village? do they charge commission? is it a better rate than uk (2.15)
-
will this be your first trip to turkey?
-
we have been 5 times before, olu deniz 3 times and ovacick 2 times but stayed in hotels all inclusive. this is totally diferent for us thats why i am trying to get as much info as possible, about prices etc. the only thing i need to know now is about money exchange.
-
well if you are a regular to Turkey you will know a Nationwide acct is by far the best as you get the best rates and no commission. Failing that you can change money in the village PTT. There is no fast cash machine in the village
I would also add that Uzumlu is VERY different to those 2 places.
-
The only problem with the PTT is it never seems to be open when I go there!
-
Snap!!
-
Ive got a sore head ,why do you pay 5ytl for an empty crate????
-
seems daft to me also, and i have also got a sore head.
-
Never mind Jon ,i am sure you will have a great time in Uzumlu ,hope to meet you when you get here. Calvin
-
The PTT charge commission when changing sterling. You will definately get a beter rate here than the UK but I would recommend you change money commission free in Fethiye or use a Natiowide card.
Just bring enough for your first days to get essentials then get yourself into Fethiye for everything like cash and main supplies.
Fi
-
Hey, driving past the PTT and it was open!! They have a new pigeon hole system for the mail, so it saves wading through mountains of letters to find the ADSL bill! My only worry is if they mis file a letter into the wrong hole - we might never get it?! Aaaarrrrggghhhhhh......!
-
Hopefully this new bloke (who seems quite switched on), will notice a letter that stays in a pigeon hole too long and will redirect it. -Fingers crossed.
-
i will probably give that place a miss i think, or do they sell anything interesting?? like the butcher, lace woman, barber etc etc.
-

-

-

-
Not a forum member but if you pop in the shop he will deliver , will look out for you all on Tuesday have a good flight .Calvin
-
Does he really do liver, calvin?
-
i hope he does do liver, that will go very nice with my beer
-
just returned back to uk, i should not have worried about getting provisions from village, eddie from the wine house and his dad the butcher were brilliant, they made sure we had plenty of supplies and they were delivered to our villa, brill people.
-
He is great isn't he ?! Cuts the best lamb chops ever, always happy to help.
-
Good talking to you Jon, hope you enjoyed your stay in Uzumlu, Wine House seems empty without you all. Calvin
-
thanks for that, we had a great time apart from our last night, we met some friends who live in calis had a few drinks in the wine house, they were 14 of us altogether, and im sorry to say we had a falling out, it was all hand bags at 10 paces really, but not a good advert to you brits living their. i apolagised for everyone the day after, but i still feel we were so very wrong.
