Title: Freeview in Turkey????
Post by: Ian on May 16, 2009, 14:22:23 PM
We currently have a small tv, connected to a Next Sat Box (without a card slot) and we get about 12 English speaking tv stations - 500 non English and 150 radio stations.

If I took an lcd tv with built in freeview over to Fethiye - plugged in my aerial lead (2 x 1m dishes on the roof - 1 hotbird - not sure what the other does but I think the fitter said it gets local stations) and did a set up scan - will it find any stations????

Secondly, will the CI slot on the "new" tv and the dishes mean I can buy a card / set up arrangement from Echostar - without needing to buy any further equipment?

You may have concluded I am not very "technical" when it comes to aerials???  :)

I don't think you will get any Channels as freeview is aerial based TV and even if you did they would all be foreign.

Freesat is your best bet but you will need a 3m dish.

Alternatively, you could watch English TV online.  :D

Stoop - is a 3m dish really a 3m dish - does that mean it is 10ft diameter - that seems massive to me - do people have them that big!!

If you take the sat box you will receive channels most will be turkish. The two dishes will most prob be turksat and hotbird. The ci slot will not work you would need a receiver with a card slot and download a patch so as it can read all cards

Graham - many thanks - does that mean if I take a "freesat" box I will get even more stations than I currently get off Next box set to Hotbird and Turksat?

Ian  :)

Ps Keith - I heard you were deported because of the size of yours????  ;)

No you would need the 3m dish pointed at astra for the freesat. For ecostar's system you would need a dish pointed at nilesat.

Ian sorry to quote you without askin first. May i ask what are the English TV channels, and, do you get any English Radio channels. Sorry to ask but i am completely at sea with Satellite stuff. Did you get the box and dishes in Tutkey ?

Many thanks, Regards, Steve.

Steve - we had 2 dishes fitted and bought a Next satellite box from a local dealer for about £100 - all-in - dishes fitted on the roof - 2 years ago. They tuned one dish in to turksih tv and one to hotbird.

So on Hotbird we get: BBC World News / TNT / MTV / Cartoon Channels / Bloomberg / France Today / Russia Today / Al Jazeera / CNN and a couple of others.

I always seem to be able to find an English film with subtitles in another language - but spoken in English. I also manage to pick up football from all over Europe but not Premier League - but I do seem to get FA Cup and International matches.

If I did it again it seems I would have been better buying a Satellite box with a card slot (for an extra tenner!) because then I could have bought a system from Echostar for a one off payment and "obtained" a card ythat would have given me access to more traditional UK channels.

But then again as a tourist there is only so much tv you can watch !!!!!!!

Hope that helps?

Ian
