Title: Swollen feet/ankles after the flight
Post by: Bluwise on May 01, 2010, 13:50:56 PM
Does anyone else suffer with swollen feet after the flight?  I have tried moving around on the plane etc but inevitably, my feet/ankles are swollen for quite a few days of the holiday.  Any remedies anyone?

Try wearing 'Flight socks' they work for me.  Best thing for swollen ankles is lie on the bed with your feet as high up on the wall as you can and drink plenty of Tonic water.

Thanks folks - I will give the socks a try and will definitely go for the tonic - but only if there's a gin in it!!

worst thing is to drink alcohol during the flight...so no gin in the tonic !!

Tried the lot! Flight socks , water tablets , the bed and wall thing, the whole 9 yards! The only thing that works for me is walking. Once we got our apartment and had to walk to and from the beach the swollen ankle problem seemed to disappear. Think it starts on the plane with cabin pressure and then gets worse with inactivity and booze!

They reckon to avoid malt, (which is in loads of things)and fresh pineapple is good too. I am the same and never wear the shoes I take with me cos I can never get them on, oh and the flight socks are only £1.99 in Home & Bargain, ;)

My ankles swell up badly, and don't really go down the whole holiday!
The more I walk, the worse they are! I have also bought flight socks for this year, will see if they work, hope so!  :)

Hey we could start a club - The Fat Ankle Club - instead of a secret handshake, we could nod knowingly at each other's feet !!:D

:D  or how about the Fat Ankle Brigade?  Then we could become known as the FAB girls!  (I use the term 'girls' loosely in my case)

I always found going in the sea helped enormously. Tt will take the swelling down very quickly or it might work just as well by going in the pool Always worked for me but fortunately dont go back to UK anymore so dont have flight problems.

Drink lots of water, and when you are in bed put a pillow under your legs to raise them a little.

Feet up on the wall with pillows or blankets underneath so you are not uncomfortable.  Fluid drains down and your body gets rid of it!!
don't for get the tonic water!!

Why the tonic water ?.is it because of the quinine ? and if so why not just get quinine tablets,
I have done the feet up the wall bit, but they swell up again after being up for a while, there must be a remedy out there somewhere,:P

Just bringing this up again as I still suffer with swollen feet etc throughout the hol.  Has anyone found any other remedies ?  Wondering if I need to see the pharmacist - maybe try water tablets?  Can't help thinking its the heat rather than the flight as we've been here ten days and no change.  I know they won't go down until we return to uk and it takes a day or so to get back to normal.

Hiya, Why don't you go and talk to the Chemist in Fethiye, the one opposite Migros.  Apparently he trained as a Doctor.  He speaks good English and really help me with an ear problem I had.
Try to drink a lot of water every day.  I always order a botte with every meal when we eat out.  Also why not go and have a spa treat, get a foot and leg massage.

That chemist is just the best "Eroglu" I think it is called, all the staff in there are so helpful   :)

Does sound like it might be the heat rather than just the flight.  I can also recommend the chemist in Fethiye, had to use them this year in May.  Very helpful and all spoke good English.
Otherwise may be worth a visit to your doctor when you get home.

Hope you manage to get it sorted, it's not a nice thing to have to put up with all your holiday.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I followed up and have some water tablets to take which hopefully will mean I can wear something other than flip flops soon!
Cost the huge sum of 1.75tl.......amazing!
Thanks again - have my fingers crossed as can't cross my legs....is bad for circulation! ;D

Somebody suggested foot massage but please don't do that.
According to my husband (who's a doctor) that is the worst you can do and it might actually involve risks.
Lots of rest and keep your legs up.

I always used to suffer not only swollen ankles but also the legs too.I found the easiest way to get rid of it was to go straight into the water....pool or sea . It seems to equalise the water in the body and the swelling reduced within a few hours.

The flight swelling in our case tends to sort its self after a couple of days. We find after a Pide and a glass of Ayran, which we love, swelling can start again. Salt intake is a major factor other than underlying medical problems, ie kidney etc. pide Ayran white bread in general here has a higher salt content. Wholemeal bread fruit dairy products and water are good to help.

I usually get this after a long haul flight and not the shorts hops on european flights. Tried flight socks but find being barefoot on grass and scrunching your toes work.
