Title: Esnaf Hospital - Health Checks
Post by: Rimms on December 13, 2012, 08:37:25 AM
Chris had been feeling unwell of late and had been to the doctors while back in the UK recently, his advice was to go home and see how it goes! On returning to Calis she continued to feel really unwell. As we haven't been here for a year yet, we aren't eligible for the SGK Healthcare scheme and were a bit worried as we both felt she needed more than a visit to our favourite pharmacist in Fethiye. A friend recommended that we go and see Margaret, the English lady who works on the foreign tourist desk at the Esnaf hospital. We did so and discussed a wide range of options, (and there were lots) eventually we settled on a comprehensive health check called a VIP. This check takes place over one day (of your choice) and consists of Brain MRI. Blood tests for 16 different conditions, Mamagram, Ultrasound on all major organs including, kidney, liver, heart and breasts, ECG, treadmill tests, a range of gynaecological tests, eye test, hearing test, various X-rays, bone density and cardio screen.

We arrived at the hospital at 08.15 and were immediately shown to the MRI department, this was repeated around all of the other speciality departments and at all times Chris was escorted by the same English speaking health advisor (Yasin) who had originally booked her in and was really pleasant and helpful. We were given an hours break at lunch and then went to see a specialist registrar who went through all of the results in great detail. The afternoon followed a similar format culminating in a consultation with the Neuro-Surgeon and then the Gynaecologist ( who was mad busy assisting with C sections for all of the ladies who wanted a 12/12/12 birthdate)

All in all we were there for seven hours and apart from a short wait in gynaecology, the system worked like clockwork. We can't praise the Esnaf more highly, the facility looks brand new and spotlessly clean, the staff pleasant, the equipment looked really state of the art and all departments are connected by a great I.T. system so each consultant could refer to relevant test results and even the food facilities are nice.

The reason for the post is to say please don't worry, like we did if you think you have a health problem, call into the Esnaf and I'm sure they will help.

Oh, and Chris, they discovered two separate but related minor conditions that were causing her problems, she is now on medication which will effect a full recovery and has a follow up appointment booked to assess progress. She is also really happy that she knows that she is totally free of any major health problems, apart from maybe anything connected with chiropody !

You must both feel reassured and glad to hear Chris is now okay!  I have heard that unlike the UK, in Turkey if you have a blood test, it will be checked for everything.  Just how much did it cost to have a full medical?  : :)

They had a range of health checks on offer, some which sounded very comprehensive and started from as little as 150 lira. The one Chris got was called the VIP which is particularly thorough and that cost 650 lira. I also forgot to say that a check for bladder and bowel cancer was included. You are also given a complete set of reports, each one signed by the individual specialist, a set of your X-rays and scans plus a couple of CDs with your MRI images.

It may sound a lot of money but its the best investment I've made since coming here.

Unfortunately that's the nature of GP's and the NHS. They are not private doctors and to get the check up Chris had you would need to go private in the UK - just like she did in Turkey.

I have no idea what £230 quid would get you over here but my guess is not a lot. Someone may know beter though.

I too had a health check at the Esnaf a few months ago. I had one or two niggling problems, one of which I had first raised with my GP in the UK 8 years ago. I was referred to an specialist and given treatment which solved the problem on a short term basis by masking the symptoms. I raised the problem with one of the specialists at the Esnaf and by using ultrasound he actually diagnosed the cause of the problem. Three days later I was admitted and had surgery which has totally eradicated the problem.

I cannot speak highly enough of the treatment and service I received at the Esnaf both during the check up and as an inpatient. As we have the government health insurance we received a substantial discount on the inpatient treatment.

We have used all three local hospitals and find them all good and what we like is you get the results that day.

Stoop, I have had a couple of private BUPA checks in the Uk over the last couple of years.

I cannot remember the exact cost but it was close to 400.00 and certainly was not as extensive as the VIP @ the Esnaf.

Dave.

The Esnaf is on the promenade in Fethiye, if you know the Yakamoz restaurant it's near there. Alternatively, walk past McDonalds on your right hand side with the sea on your left. The phone number is 0252 612 6400

I am under a gyni in Uk and his fee is £280 for half an hour any diagonstic testes oops tests are extra!!
someone I know had to have a mamogram recently in Turkey due to being in a lot of pain as she had residency she was able to go to the Devlet for it and it cost around £30, on her return to Uk the clinic she went to commented on how brilliant the mamagram images were, apparantly Turkey has digital images and the consultant said we dont have that in Uk.
George that sounds brilliant all those tests for that price and also having peace of mind is something you cant buy  :)

We sat in the Devlet for 2 hours waiting to see a doctor about Johns back pain.
The queue wasn't going down as lots of people crowded around the doors and went in as soon as it opened.
The pain got too bad for John sitting all that time, so I went to see the English speaking rather arrogant, indifferent guy at reception who probably should have done all the computer booking in when we went in the day before, and would have saved 20 minutes of him chatting to his friend while booking us in...anyway, he said the people going in are just needing boxes ticked for their driving licences.
So we would just have to wait. We were number 70 and the screen was showing number 10.
So I explained John couldn't sit any longer so could we have our money back, he said no, only into our bank account.
I had paid cash, but he still insisted he couldn't give it back.
I insisted he could and a few minutes later we left the Devlet with the cash.
In the car I called the Esnaf.

Appointment the next day, bang on time.
Examination, MRI, consultation, prescription, all completed within the hour for 310tl. MRI showed slipped disc, no need or an op at the moment, but needs to be very careful about lifting etc. good to know what's wrong and how to look after it.
Faultless.

I had a thyroid examination at the Esnaf, full blood screening, thyroid scan and consultation a few weeks ago, 340tl. Friendly efficient staff, couldn't fault the service at all.

Not sure I would go back to the Devlet unless had to for financial reasons, although we may have just had a bad experience, many people think its great and have had no problems.

my wife needed treatment so we went to devlet polyclinic where they gave her a quick examination then refered us to antalya university hospital . must say the translaters were excellent in devlet my wife neede m r scan 70 lira in antalya 350 to 400 lira at esnaf but after travelling back and forth to antalya a dozen times 4 hours each way and a few thousand lira on tests and scans we came back to u.k and in a few days we are further ahead in treatment than 14 weeks of treatment in turkey so i for one will never knock the n h s
