Title: How to Get to Koca Calis, Plus interrogation.
Post by: tonyb on April 02, 2013, 17:46:59 PM
Sorry for all the questions, but we've been meaning to get down there for ages. Just need to know if it's as nice as we've heard & worth the effort.I really hope so.

1.Can you get to Koca Calis on the dolmus from Calis & if so,what time is the latest one back ?
2.What is the beach like?
3.Do you pay for sunbeds or just buy a few bevvies during the day from the nearest bar?
4.Which of the bars/restaurants come recommended.
5.Is Koca Calis the sort of place for a full evening out i.e Meal & Drinks.
6.How many bars & restaurants actually are there in Koca Calis.

1.Can you get to Koca Calis on the dolmus from Calis & if so,what time is the latest one back ?
Yes - just get the dolmus from "downtown" Calis to the dolmus "station" which is almost in Koca Calis - or in season, just ask if they will drop you at the Surf Club as many of them will carry on that far as its only another 300 yds. Not sure about times as we always walk there.

2.What is the beach like?
Generally pebbly, but sandy at the water line. Some of the bars & restaurants cover the pebbles with sand to make it more comfortable to sit out on the beach.

3.Do you pay for sunbeds or just buy a few bevvies during the day from the nearest bar?
Up til now - just keep buying drinks and you dont pay for a sunbed.

4.Which of the bars/restaurants come recommended.
Thats another story. Surf Club is good but there can be a lack of attentivencess at times. I'm sure others will have something to say about where else is recommended.

5.Is Koca Calis the sort of place for a full evening out i.e Meal & Drinks.
Yes - but its not so busy in the evenings - not all the bars stay open at night especially near the start and end of the season. I can recommend the Surf Club BBQ night (usually a Friday in the season) as they also put on some entertainment like the fire dancers.

6.How many bars & restaurants actually are there in Koca Calis.

I'd guess at about 5-6 beachfront places if they are all open this year plus one or two a little more inland.

Hope that helps - I'm sure others will add and contradict my answers.

I think iank your pretty much spot on,  during the day i prefer the surf cafe end but at night i prefer to eat at defne pension and then go for a drink at sands bar, which is about the busiest and pretty much like a uk pub as you can get in turkey,  the restaurants on the beach other than the surf cafe on BBQ night  are ok but are normally very quite and really are more suited for lunch times,  everyone to there own so give it a try to sum up the best way to describe Koca is Marmite love it or hate it !!

you can find koca by walking along the prom with your back to the water taxi bridge for about 25 - 30 minutes, just head towards  for the kite surfers  and thats the start,at the surf cafe ...

And mine. I prefer Koca Calis in so many ways but mainly because it feels like the country I fell in love with all those years ago.

Must admit, in all the years we've been going to Calis we've never spent a lot of time down that end, but this topic has made me determined to give it a try this year.  The weather when we go in May is ideal for walking so think that's on the list now.   :)

Pretty much like a uk pub as you can get in turkey and why would i do that =  answer if after a month or so in Turkey you can say that you  dont miss something then i take my hat off to you, for me its like someone who says  they start to miss silly things like  Bisto Gravey ect,  i start to miss standing at the bar having draft beer and a bit of sky sports to watch, thats why i love Turkey i can have the best of both worlds   :)

Fair enough, if that's what you like, each to their own and all that!  I've never been lucky enough yet to spend more than a couple of weeks in Calis, or indeed anywhere else in Turkey, so never there long enough to miss anything about the UK.  In that two weeks though there are certain things I definitely don't want.  One is an English type pub and another is a 'traditional' Sunday roast!  : :)

Our end is certainly worth a butchers. Go daytime and you will be able to sample the beach and the excellent sunbeds for nothing if you purchase a drink or two. It's also worth taking your mountain bikes down that end so that you can explore the little tracks that lead to all sorts of places. You might even find Ciftlik or Kargi if you are lucky ;-)

It's certainly more like Calis was ten years ago but nothing like Koca Calis was back then. I think it was the Birlik or nothing back in those days. Plus the odd corner shop - unless you went to the village itself.

Not sure about the mountain bikes for us Stoop  :o, but we certainly don't mind a good walk. It's 11 years ago this year we first came to Calis and it's difficult to remember what it was like then but will definitely give Koca Calis a go this year.

Spot on Ian! We stayed at the hotel Yucel just near there. It's still going strong I think.

Marina - it's just at the start of Koca Calis according to some. I think you need to walk with the sea on your left for about 10/15 mins before you get to it for real though.

Thanks Stoop, it's now on my list of 'something different to do this year'.  We try and make an effort to do at least one, it's so easy to just drift back to the usual places knowing you'll enjoy them. There's loads of places for us still to explore out there.

How far does Koca Calis extend, would it be as far as the Telmessoss complex, or would that come under Ciftlik?

telmessos is indeed still koca calis, not sure where it ends though

talking of telmessos how did we fare over the winter regarding flooding or has it been a dryer winter

I think most local boundaries are partly down to individual interpretation. On this one I would personally say that Telmessos is itself the last thing in Koca Calis  :)

Agreed Keith - I think it ends there and if you continue on you probably pass through Kargi and then Yanniklar.

I would say it goes from Surf club to Sat restaurant and as far back as the bridge/ canal behind the seafront hotels  :)
Title: Re: How to Get to Koca Calis, Plus interrogation.
Post by: stoop on April 06, 2013, 13:05:39 PM
Yes I would say just past the Surf Club (I class that as being in Koka) to Sat. Not sure about inland though.

I think Calis refers to the spit/lagoon/peninsula(?) over the bridge from the water taxi station - so Calis is a couple miles x 40 metres in size - effectively next to none of us live/lived in Calis  :)
