Cement factories - For information
« on: March 04, 2008, 18:34:34 PM »
Below are extracts from news items which show some of the problems with Cement Factories in the UK.  The UK has a very active Environment Agency and Health and Safety Executive, coupled with strict UK and EU anti pollution laws, which, thankfully, keep these issues to a minimum but still they occur.

This thread is for information and not for personal attacks.  We are trying to highlight the potential problem for Uzumlu residents (Turkish and Ex-Pat)on health, environment and the livlihoods of the Uzumlu farmers who depend on the land and water for their crops.

To those who have helped so far, thank you very much, your efforts are much appreciated.  To those who want to help or think they can help in any way, please contact Fi or myself.

All of us continue to support the Turkish working group in their efforts and hope the forthcoming court battle will see the end to the Cement factory.

Eric

Extract from the British Cement Association's own report 2006

In 2006, the Environment Agency took out one
prosecution and served four enforcement notices on
bca members. At Padeswood works in north Wales,
Castle Cement was prosecuted for dioxin emissions and
also received two enforcement notices regarding dust
and reporting procedures. Lafarge Cement received two
enforcement notices both relating to compliance with
the Waste Incineration Directive, one at Hope works the
second at Westbury.

Cement firm fined over emissions

A cement company has been fined £99,000 after admitting nine offences, including releasing more than the permitted amount of dioxins.
Flintshire magistrates also told Castle Cement to pay £9,300 costs over its plant at Padeswood, near Mold.
The offences covered March 2004 to January 2005, and the company asked for 29 other matters to be taken into consideration.
Neil Evans, prosecuting, said the breaches were not deliberate, but a failure to notify the agency "must have been the result of a deliberate decision by somebody within the company".

BBC News 3rd Oct 2006

Cement firm fined for polluting
A cement plant's owners have been fined £400,000 after homes were polluted.
Cemex, which owns the factory in Rugby, was prosecuted by the Environment Agency after people nearby complained dust was covering their homes and cars.

The case was referred to Warwick Crown Court after magistrates felt the maximum £20,000 fine they could impose for causing pollution was not enough.

 Dust fallout leaves homes covered
A village in Warwickshire has been covered in a fallout of white dust from a nearby cement factory.
Clay and sand particles fell on Long Lawford early on Saturday morning.

It came from a clinker cooler at the Rugby Cement and Cemex factory. The firm apologised to residents and said it is working with them.

Cement firm pays for car valeting

Campaigners say a 'kiln flush' left dust on homes and cars
A cement firm has paid for professional car valeters to clean the vehicles of nearby residents caught in two separate outpourings of dust from its chimney.
Castle Cement's Padeswood plant near Mold, has reported a pair of so-called kiln flushes in the past three weeks.

The emissions left a film of cement dust on downwind cars and homes. A total of 30 cars were later valeted.
At last week's meeting of Penyffordd Community Council, chairman Colin Bithell, who lives near the plant, called for the site to be closed.

"It's a regular occurrence now that you put you windscreen wipers on because there is white dust everywhere.

BBC News 4th March 2005

Cement works ordered to shut kiln

A Flintshire cement works has been ordered by the Environment Agency to stop using one of its kilns following a breach of emission limits for dioxins.
The enforcement notice requires Castle Cement's Padeswood works to suspend activities until it can prove it can operate within the limits.
