Burns Night is being celebrated with a traditional supper in Calis on Friday 23 January. The atmospheric evening which is being held in the cosy Harman hotel in central Calis, will feature live bagpipe music, Scottish folk dancing and a tasty 3 course meal.
Burns Night immortalises Scotland's most famous poet Robbie Burns and is celebrated by Scotsman all over the world on January 25. However as this year, the 250th anniversary of his birth, falls on a Sunday, the Carnival Committee are celebrating early.
Guests will be piped into the hotel by bagpipe player Charlie Leighton, where they will receive a welcome drink before sitting down to enjoy a delicious meal of "Bridie" soup, Haggis, "Neaps and tatties" and a choice of Mars bar cheesecake, Banoffee pie, lemon cheesecake or apple pie. There will also be shepherd's pie or vegetarian casserole for those who do not wish to sample the delights of haggis.
The formal ceremony of piping in the haggis and the dramatic "address to the haggis" will be followed by short toasts before guests are treated to a display of Scottish folk dancing by young Garreth Rous. Everyone will then be invited to take to the floor to join in traditional Scottish dancing led by dance teacher Sine Rous.
This is the second Burns Night Supper to be organised by the Carnival Committee and we intend it to be a memorable, fun evening. Toasts will be kept much shorter than last year as we want guests to have more time for dancing.
