I dont want to commit to a contract but we are coming out for a few  weeks and wondering if its worth bringing  my laptop!!

I think you can but you can also get free internet access at quite a few bars and restaurants now as well. Most will happily give you access and we even found some of our neighbours would as well.

Vodafone are doing dongles now... they are contract for 12, 18 (or more) months, paying monthly. 1GB about 30TL per month and 3GB 50TL per month.
I know that Turkcell have now started too, but I don't know the prices.
If it's just for your holiday.... try to get to bars etc that have free internet access as Stoop says.

Do you have to use a Turkish persons name to get a dongle?

You can use any unlocked dongle, it`s the sim card that is the important bit

Just made a brief enquiry at Vodaphone in Istanbul Capacity and you can get a plug in for 180 lira.

I have just checked for myself when we come and you can use a 3 mobile broadband dongle in Turkey on either contract or PAYG, also Vodafone and O2 on contract.  3 network look the cheapest at £3 per megabyte.  It is expensive compared to the UK but I will only use it for transferring money between accounts and topping up my pre paid card.  The 3 mobile broadband uses Turkcell.  Hope this is of use.
